I am a Texas certified, experienced teacher of young children, enjoying providing children with the skills they need in becoming successful and excited readers. Having been an inclusion and a resource teacher, I have had the experience of working with children one to one and seeing the benefit of focused, individualized reading instruction. I especially enjoy and am successful in teaching pre-kindergarten through
2nd grade children, laying a strong foundation in the primary reading skills. As I will begin tutoring children, I will first assess their strengths and weaknesses in the areas of phonemic awareness (spoken letter sounds and spoken words) and graphophonemic knowledge (awareness of spoken sounds and words and their relationship to the written letters and words.) The assessments will target my instruction so that I can use effective instructional activities that will support their reading development. My goal for my students is that they will be successful, excited readers as they learn to read and then read to learn, to wonder, to explore, to discover, and to share! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a Special Education teacher, I have worked with many students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I am able to help these students learn how to organize their study materials and their learning environment in order to focus their attention to the task at hand. I also know the importance of providing frequent stretch/movement breaks for these students.
I am a Texas certified teacher with a B.S. in Education. I have been teaching elementary age children in public school environments for almost 30 years. I have taught reading, writing, math, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education. I have utilized worksheets, hands-on experiences, group involvement, and learning games.
As an inclusion and reading resource teacher, I have provided phonics instruction to students in kindergarten through 4th grade. In individual instruction and in small group instruction, focus is initially on phonological awareness and then focus is on letter-sound relationships. Successful learning takes place as I utilize games, songs, plastic letters, picture/letter cards, computer games, spelling, and reading practice. A very important aspect of reading practice is providing students with stories and books that pertain not only to their reading level, but to their interests. My desire is for my students to become successful, excited readers.
