My teaching flows forth from a learning life. As a first-generation college student, I learned to navigate the system by trial and error. As a magna cum laude graduate and a veteran, I saw how work and single-mindedness pay off. As a tutor and university instructor, I share deep, practical strategy with all my students, boosting grades and test scores, while helping them realize their potential and develop grit.
Recent successes include a college student who moved from academic probation one semester to earning a 4.0 a semester later. Another high school student improved two grade levels in writing in just 12 hours and eight grade levels in just 40 hours. I love my work!
I specialize in English, writing, and study skills for success in school and on the SAT, ACT, CLEP, TSI, GED, and STAAR exams. I tutor students aged 7 to 67 tackling a variety of subjects, projects, and skills, and I guarantee to challenge without overwhelming.

William is always on time, kind, brilliant in his teaching my daughter, and patient. She is feeling so much more confident and excited about her studies because of his excellent teaching, his obvious passion for learning, and age appropriate explanations. I am very impressed.
William did an amazing job helping my struggling 10 year old find his confidence to write. In addition, he taught him how to make a web page and gave him multiple tools for self-editing his work. It speaks volumes that my son is disappointed that we're at a point where he no longer needs tutoring. As different challenges arise, we will definitely seek out William's help again!

I chose William because of the number of reviews that mentioned PATIENCE, and we were not disappointed. My 9-year-old son genuinely enjoyed the lesson--even though it included his number one dread, writing--and came away with actual hope that school could get better for him with William's help. And if he's happy, then I'm over the moon.
My senior needed some last minute prep for the writing portion of the ACT tests. William B. was able to not only help her feel more prepared for the writing section, but also gave her great tips for the entire test, alleviating much of her anxiety in just one short week. He was accommodating and knowledgeable with great tools.
I met William last week for my first study session. He was very helpful land put me on the correct track I was looking for. He took time to hear about the exam I was studying for, he had experience in both the fire service from the military and from assisting others with police department promotional exams. A small background, I have a total of five books and approximately 3000 pages of info for a 100 question multiple choice exam. William walked me through the review process and was able to break down the material to a much more manageable task. He also introduced me to study material on line that has been very beneficial.I will for sure use in in the coming month for more sessions.
When looking for a tutor for my son, I look for patience and tutor's style of teaching. William is patient and his approach to improving my son's writing skills works very well. William does a great job communicating with both me and my son and is flexible with our busy schedule.

We are very pleased with William's tech savvy tutoring approach for language arts and SAT/ ACT prep! My son, a senior, finds him very relatable and helpful. William is also very valuable for college entry essay aid. He made certain that my son wrote the essays but helped him recognize where to look for mistakes. William is very prompt, flexible, and easy to schedule. He goes above and beyond to make certain the student is receiving the instruction needed!
William has been tutoring my two elementary-age boys weekly. During the interview process, William provided me with a comprehensive curriculum, defining the best methodologies and tactics for working with my youngest son, age 7 (almost 8), who is struggling to stay engaged with his current schoolwork. William works with my 9 year old for one hour each Wednesday and my 7 year old two hours each Wednesday. The boy's would each take more time with William if only their schedules allowed it!
The boys have benefited from William's intelligence, patience, and particularly his influential style of engaging their curiosity. In addition, William has a gift for pushing them beyond their existing expectations of their ability and doing so in a manner which - in the midst of their pushing back, be it whining or sassing or attempting to eek out an answer from him instead of using their own minds - quietly nudges them through the resistance until the breakthrough whereupon laughter is heard from both sides. This laughter has become an indicator for me that yet another stage of breakthrough learning has been surmounted.
One of the most rewarding examples of the progress made with William occurred a couple of nights ago when my 7 year old son sat down and explained the intricate details of a computer game which I have previously attempted to understand to no avail. He walked me through each detail, connecting the whole and explaining with patience and vigor the objective of the game and each of the probable outcomes were I to choose one option over anther and etc. The point of excitement for me was his growth, maturity and intelligence actualized. I could see in this 30 minute interaction, bits of William's influence showing up in spades - the patience, intelligence and quiet passion each applied toward urging my understanding. These characteristics and embodied with ease and willingness were telltale signs of William's consistent involvement.
Patience (in my opinion) with children is a gift not often endowed in the intelligent-minded and kinetic-oriented spirit. William's gift, in this instance realized with children, is no doubt equally realized with any age student under his tutelage. And this is why I have taken the time to write this review - the first review I have ever written within the context of an internet community. Suffice it to say, there aren't enough stars to effectively articulate our delight in working with William.
William does a wonderful job of taking my son's interests and using them to enhance lessons. My son often spends quite a bit of time after lessons working on things they have gone over. In just a few lessons we have seen great improvement in my son's school work. I highly recommend him.
I highly recommend William. He went above and beyond our expectations in tutoring my daughter during her 2nd semester at Southwestern University. He was prompt and always accommodating if she needed extra time. He also showed her unique techniques in writing and the study skills she lacks in. We are looking forward to using William again in the fall.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I tutor many students diagnosed with dyslexia and ADD/ADHD. They achieve consistent improvement with decoding and reading abilities. I also teach students diagnosed with dyslexia in my courses at Texas State University. There, I provide a differentiated approach to guide them toward autonomous learning. Through my work at Texas State, I also attend professional development sessions every semester. In these sessions, I learn the newest strategies for individualizing instruction.
Prior to entering academia, I worked as a public affairs/media relations specialist for the U.S. Government. In that capacity, I spoke to media at the local, state, national, and international level, constructing and delivering talking points, mission messages, and situational de-briefs for many audiences. Since 2010, I have been an active speaker in academia, averaging 4-5 public presentations per year on various topics to various audiences.
Since 2011, I have taught Effective Learning, an educational psychology course covering all aspects of study skills. I have also completed all coursework toward a PhD in Developmental Education, the field of study related to assisting under-prepared students in making the successful transition to higher education.
