I was disappointed, too, that the students' schedules conflicted with my other commitments scheduled. Also, I thought I was getting two new students per week but the only student scheduled couldn't meet consistently when I was free because of his extracurricular activities. In addition, I found it difficult to know what to prepare ahead of time for each lesson from four possible subjects. I felt I could not realistically do a professional job under these circumstances. I cancelled the two lessons we had scheduled four days ahead of time because I had a new family who consistently wanted tutoring every week on days I could accommodate.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I completed a Master of Divinity that included studies of the Bible such as the book of Mark, new Testament history, New Testament Greek, old Testament theology and the Pentateuch.

English

As a high school librarian, I was tutoring students regularly when they came to the library to study or do research. I have three degrees with an English minor in two of them. I helped research history and literature and biology for research papers. I enjoy working with 10th graders. I have two granddaughters who are 15 and excellent students.

ESL/ESOL

I taught all grade levels at one time or another and have enjoyed some study of Spanish. We can practice conversation in English and study grammar and the differences in Spanish and English grammar, vocabulary, etc. Actually many words in Spanish are very much like some words in English. If you need help in a different language, I can still teach you the basics of English reading, speaking, writing, etc.

Grammar

English was my minor for my bachelor of science and master of science degrees. Four courses I completed with an A and a B were "English 101 and 102: rhetoric and composition." My grammar was especially scrutinized when I wrote my thesis on diagnosing spelling difficulties, and when I wrote all my papers for all 90 hours of study at Asbury Theological Seminary.

Proofreading

I wrote a thesis for my master's degree with an English minor. I have three degrees and two of those are English minors. I wrote many, many papers for my three years at Asbury Theological Seminary to get my master of divinity. I enjoy helping students prepare for the ACT and SAT essay writing sections and their reading comprehension.l

Religion

My Master of Divinity degree included studies in theology, Greek, church history, evangelism, preaching, and Biblical analysis. I have been preaching and teaching and writing Bible studies since 1998. I have been under appointment in the United Methodist Church since 1999.

Vocabulary

There is a recommended basic vocabulary for every grade level in school. I teach reading comprehension which depends on good vocabulary understandings. I have three degrees and two of them had minors in English/library science. I have taught 30 years with certification to teach K-12. Often I can teach a person a mnemonic or the history of a word, prefix or suffix that will help them remember the meaning of each word.

Great tutor

Mary is preparing my child for the reading and writing portions of the SAT. My son called me after the first lesson to thank me for bringing Mary on board. He said he had a feeling he was going to learn a lot. Mary is a master of her craft and has created an environment conducive to learning. She has been altogether honest, patient and calm. She comes prepared for lessons, uses different media to
