About Lauren

I am currently attending college to become a teacher. I am majoring in special education. I am also a music minor with the hopes to incorporate it into my curriculum. I have found that each student learns in different ways and in order to reach the maximum number of students, you must try as many ways possible.

In high school I was a Life Skills and Special Education aide. Senior year I was on early release and would go volunteer at the lower schools with their special education and PPCD classes. I have always had a passion for working with children and I especially love working with those with disabilities. I have worked in regular classrooms as well, but I do not learn as much in those situations. I believe that it is important not only for your students to learn from you, but also for you to learn from your students.

I also have an extreme passion for music. Music has been involved my entire life. I started young singing along to tv shows and then as I grew up I was in children's choirs, followed by band. The main focus of my music at this point is more toward the instrumental side. My main instruments are flute and piccolo, but I am learning oboe, piano, and guitar as well.

I have experience tutoring from kindergarten to middle school, although I do not object to tutoring upper grade levels. I was enrolled in all AP and honors classes in high school, as well as taking college classes on the side. The core subjects I am best at are Science and English. I am not opposed to tutoring other things, I just might have to review the students material a little.

I love tutoring because, as previously mentioned, I love to learn new things. You might ask how I have learned new things as a tutor, but think about it. If you are working with a child, they might see the situation differently than you do and bring in a new viewpoint. This causes you to think about what they said and further increases your knowledge on the subject. I also just generally am a people person meaning I love helping and working with people.

I have dealt with children with a variety of disabilities on many levels of the spectrum.

I have been playing flute for nearly ten years now. I have taken private lessons as well as studied new techniques and ways of playing on my own. I have some method books and exercises to help strengthen different aspects of your playing.

I am a pretty flexible person as far as availability goes. I absolutely love teaching and helping people in any way that I can.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I believe that I am qualified to teach those with ADD or ADHD because I myself have them. I went through all of my previous schooling (Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade) and learned ways to cope and work around those things. I believe that I could share my knowledge and how I dealt with it, as well as other possible ideas of things to try with any student who might need help in this area. I am also currently studying special education in college.

Flute

I have been playing flute for nearly ten years now. I have several method books, such as those by Mary Karen Clardy and Essential Elements, and exercises to improve different aspects of playing, double and flutter tonguing, tone in all registers, and more. I own a B-Foot and a C-Foot flute and have the most experience on them. I have played bass flute, an alto flute, and am greatly experienced on piccolo.
