About Anne

I am certified to teach K-8, all subjects, by the Texas Education Agency. In addition to teaching elementary school I taught courses at the University of Texas at Austin in the undergraduate teacher education program. I also supervised dozens of student teachers while at UT.

For the past 17 years I have worked closely with educators by providing consultation, professional development and curriculum design through my company, 21st Century Schools.

I am able to present lessons in such a way that the CCSS are learned in a relevant, rigorous and real world context. I do not treat the CCSS as isolated bits of information and skills, but teach them in an integrated fashion which helps the student truly understand and learn them.

My motto is, "Learning is serious, but that doesn't mean it has to be grim." Neuroscience has definitely proven that stress and fear will shut down the parts of the brain where learning occurs. My goal is to help your child realize that he/she is actually smart, that learning is fun and that he/she can truly succeed.

I teach each student many specific thinking tools and study skills; these can be used from now on, not only in school, but in life and career.

I think that I must have had an excellent phonics teacher as a child. Phonics just comes naturally to me, and as one who began my teaching career by student teaching in the first grade, and then teaching first grade for several years, I know phonics and its importance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

In addition to my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, with a minor in Mathematics, I have a Master's degree in Education. I also have approximately 100 hours of 3.9 GPA coursework in the Ph.D. program at the University of Texas at Austin in Curriculum Studies.

I have spent the last 17 years providing professional development, curriculum design and consultation to teachers, curriculum directors, principals and superintendents in the USA as well as abroad.

I am familiar with the CCSS and know how these standards can be achieved with ease within a context of relevant curriculum.

Elementary (K-6th)

My Texas teaching certificate is for grades K-8, all subjects. I have taught first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades as a classroom teacher.

I have also served as the district Curriculum Director, providing professional development for my entire school district.

Phonics

First of all, as a young child my grandmother taught me phonics, and I got much more training in phonics in elementary school.

In college, I took a phonics class; I missed only one correct phonemic spelling the entire semester.

I did my student teaching in first grade, where we taught phonics, and I taught first grade for several years after that.
