I have a Master's of Education in Reading, and I am certified to teach Pre-K through 6th grade with an ESL endorsement. I have experience with intervention strategies and can provide intervention for reading and writing with all levels.

I love teaching and learning. I find that I learn as much from my students as they learn from me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

In addition to my teaching experience, I have also been a case worker for youth and adolescents with ADD/ADHD. I have helped these students develop plans to help them succeed in school. I also have experience helping these students in my own classrooms.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's of Education in Reading and my major focus was on dyslexia and other reading problems. I have been trained to be an interventionist. I have tutored several students who have dyslexia and worked with them in a school setting. I am familiar with several methods of teaching students including Orton-Gillingham.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a teaching certificate for Pre-K-6th grades self-contained. I have taught elementary school for 11 years. I also have a Master's of Education in Reading.

Handwriting

I have been trained on many different handwriting programs. Two of the programs I like are Handwriting without Tears and Orton-Gillingham. I have taught handwriting to all different aged students in my classes and intervention.

Phonics

I have a Master's of Education in Reading Education. I have taught phonics to students of different ages and abilities. I have also worked for an educational publishing company and written intervention curricula in the area of phonics.

STAAR

I have taught in Texas for 11 of my years of teaching. I have taught a tested grade for six of those years. I currently teach fourth grade and understand the knowledge needed for the STAAR test at all levels.

Study Skills

I have been a teacher for eleven years. I was also a case worker for youth and adolescents helping them with social skills and study skills. I have worked with many students of different ages helping them to develop the skills necessary to be successful students.

Helped with 5th Grade Dyslexic and ADHD student

My daughter is dyslexic and has ADHD and Melissa has done a great job of tutoring her. She comes prepared with all materials needed for each lesson! My daughter thinks she is very nice and says it is easy to understand her instructions.
