I am a high school English teacher in Galveston and hold an English Language Arts and Reading teaching certificate for grades 4-12. I am also ESL (English as a Second Language) certified. As a teacher, as well as a United States Air Force veteran and mother of teenage boys, I am structured, open-minded, and passionate about helping others succeed. Because reading is the foundation for all learning, and writing and speaking is the expression of ideas and information; it is critical for students, who struggle, to strengthen these skills in order to be successful in school and beyond.
My approach is to encourage reluctant and struggling readers to discover text they want to read. Unfortunately, with standardized testing and larger class sizes, students are assigned reading selections based on test prep or whole group activities, therefore students relate the reading purpose to answering test questions correctly or responding to comprehension questions that will be graded based on their viewpoint. When students discover their own purpose for reading, they will want to read and, ultimately they will build reading skills and vocabulary that will benefit them in school and on tests.
My areas of specialization are improving reading fluency and comprehension, building critical reading and thinking skills, developing writing composition and conventions, increasing vocabulary and meaning, as well as preparing students for STAAR reading, writing, and English I and II End of Course assessments. Individualizing reading and writing lessons, specific to your child’s interest and level of reading, will promote their reading confidence in the classroom and on test. When students are confident in their reading, they are better equipped to respond to questions based on their understanding and analysis. My focus will be to build your students reading level and interest, while introducing core skills that are taught in the classroom, using text that appeal to them. In addition, I will reinforce their school lessons and homework by explaining and clarifying reading and writing assignments. However, I do not suggest the entire tutoring sessions be spent doing homework or classroom assignments. I prefer to spend the time scheduled, concentrating on growing your child overall academically and intellectually.
If you are a middle school or high school student who struggles with reading, does not like reading, or wishes you could improve your reading to do better in school; I would like to work with you to become successful.
If you are a high school student who needs to retake the English I or II STAAR End of Course assessment, or middle school student taking the reading or writing STAAR assessment, I offer tutoring services that can help.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
