About Justin

Hi, my name is Justin. My students call me "Mr. Jesi". I am currently a Spanish and Art teacher at a private school in Galveston, Texas. As an avid learner myself, I enjoy working with all types of students. Though I teach K-6, I am an adjunct instructor at Galveston Community College's Continuing Education Department where I often have the opportunity to instruct students ranging from high school age to seniors. My students enjoy my method of teaching/instruction for its low-pressure, patient and usually amusing style!

Language related:

I have studied many languages and speak two of them fluently, Spanish and French. In other languages, such as German, Japanese, and Polish, I am comfortable enough to get around in cities where they are spoken. I enjoy grammar and teaching the importance of it in learning a new language. Understanding the grammar of a language opens the door to the whole language much more than simple phrase memorization. As a writer, the mechanics of the english language cannot be understated. The rules of our language dictate its effectiveness in our society and culture. Learning even the most basic "rules of the road" can elevate one's writing and speaking skills enough to ensure that language efficiency does not become a barrier to future success.

Art related:

I do not teach crafts. I teach my students the fundamental elements and principles of art along with its rich history that delves into the depths of the stone age (neolithic) and sweeps forward to the contemporary and pop artists of our modern times. I, myself, have worked as a graphic designer for more than 30 years in the commercial sign industry and have also worked as an independent artist in several types of media. I have won several awards for my own private work. I may not use every medium in my private work, but I am familiar with nearly all of them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have been teaching the fundamental principles of art for more than ten years. I am an accomplished illustrator, teaching linear perspective and isometric drawing.

Grammar

I am a writer and speak multiple languages, a bit of a "grammar nerd" for certain. I try make understanding grammar interesting and fun.

Painting

I have taught painting (in several media) for more than ten years. I am an award-winning painter, member of a local art guild (Galveston Art League). Most of the works that I produce for sale have sold upon their first viewing. As an artist, painting is my primary form of expression. As an art teacher, I stress it equally alongside of drawing.

Reading

In the past, I have worked with Project Read in Ohio, which helped improve literacy among all ages. The program now exists in many other states. Currently, I am a teacher at a local private school in Galveston (Spanish and Art). I am also a writer, playwright and avid reader with a strong understanding of phonetics and grammar.

Spanish

I teach Spanish at the elementary level. It is where I would begin with any language. I start with greetings and simple phrases, and move on from there. Spanish grammar is my main study of Spanish. I think it is wise to know the rules of the road before learning colloquialisms (everyday phrases and such).

Writing

I completed BerkeleyX - ColWri2.1x and 2.2x Principles of Written English through UC Berkeley and Write101x English Grammar and Style through The University of Queensland. Aside from being a grammarian and language teacher, I am a novel and screenplay writer currently finishing my first book. Recently, I have written and directed several plays for children's theater. Last month, I performed a central role in "The Odd Couple" by Neil Simon. I write every day as it is central to the discipline.
