About Gerald

Bio

I have a broad geological background with initial emphasis in economic minerals and rocks followed primarily by 30 years of oil and gas exploration in Latin America and West Africa. I was a manager of oil and gas data in the US, Indonesia and Qatar. I taught university level classes in geology in Spanish in Ecuador and Costa Rica when I was a Peace Corps member and in English in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

During 2016 and 2017 I tutored a University of Houston geology graduate student in three of the classes that she was taking. She received grades of A in each one.

I am accustomed working with students from various ethnic backgrounds and varying levels of understanding of geology - from none to good. I taught introductory classes through advanced classes for juniors, seniors and graduate students. If a student doesn't seem to be grasping the concepts, I will try different approaches in explaining the material.

I learned Spanish when I was 24 as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador through class work, reading and having to translate geologic text materials for use in the class room. I have a good grounding in how to approach learning Spanish and the desirable level of vocabulary as one becomes more proficient with Spanish.

If you need personalized help with understanding or learning the material you are studying, feel free to reach out to me. I can be available almost any day of the week and almost any time if arrangements are made in advance.

I taught beginning geology labs and classes in the past, while pursuing my MSc and PhD degrees, and junior and senior level classes at The Petroleum Institute. I've helped several students online here in Houston and two in person.
