B.S. Illinois State University (Deaf Education)
My name is Alisia and I received a Bachelor's of Science from Illinois State University, in Deaf Education. I taught Deaf Education for four years in Plano. I have also taught 3rd grade Bilingual Education for two years. This year, I am currently teaching American Sign Language and Spanish II at the high school level. My love of languages has driven me to become certified so that I am able to teach these languages and share my passion of languages with others. I am also certified in Elementary Education up to 8th grade. Due to the fact that I have taught Bilingual Education, I understand how to break down readings for comprehension and simplify the meaning. This helps the student better understand what to look for in the passage as well as different strategies to use not only for reading but also for math and writing.
My tutoring experience has varied with different clients. When I taught Deaf Education, I tutored in ASL. I did this so that parents were able to communicate with their deaf child as their child was learning. I have also tutored in Spanish and with that, we have read screenplays and gone to go watch the play. Ex. Teatro Dallas. I also have tutoring experience in teaching ESL on different levels from Basic English to more advanced students teaching writing skills.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher for the deaf. However, I am currently teaching ASL at the high school level. I have completed half of my testing for certification and will be finishing the rest at the end of the summer.
