About Randy

After having spent my sophomore year of high school in Germany and learning the language, I was recruited into the Army as a linguist.

After boot camp, I went to the military's language school in Monterey, CA to learn Spanish. After serving my enlistment in the Army, I returned to my home state of Montana to pursue a B.S. in Business.

In the corporate world, I have used my language skills at all of the companies I have worked for. I've worked for two Spanish banks, and have worked in numerous countries as an internal auditor. I obtained my master's degree and CPA license a few years ago.

Speaking both German and Spanish has given me a greater understanding of the English language than most native speakers can appreciate. Since English originated as a Germanic language that was subsequently heavily influenced by a Romance language, I can explain the idiosyncrasies of the English language with interesting historical tidbits. I studied in Germany for a year in high school, and in Austria for a year in college.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I've become fluent myself in two foreign languages - German and Spanish, so I know the difficulties one encounters when trying to learn a new language. I've also studied abroad for two years, so I can appreciate the culture shock one encounters outside of his home country. Having learned foreign languages has actually helped improve my English, as I now have a better grasp of grammatical concepts and word origins.

German

I learned German as an exchange student my sophomore year of high school. While in college, I served as a German linguist in the Army Reserves. During my junior year of college, I studied in Austria for one year.

Spanish

I learned Spanish at the military's language institute, and served for four years active duty as a Spanish language linguist. I was awarded linguist of the year in the Army, and was rewarded with studying in Costa Rica for a month, while staying with a local family. I've been able to use my language skills in the corporate world, working for two large multi-national Spanish banks, BBVA and Santander.
