My Formula For Success

Students are taught content in school, but are typically never taught how to study effectively. This directly impacts not only grades but more importantly- a student's level of self-efficacy. Students with high levels of self-efficacy develop a deeper interest and a stronger commitment to their studies, stop avoiding challenges and instead approach them with a sense that they can be mastered, and recover more quickly from disappointments. Therefore, teaching students effective study skills is an integral part of my success formula, and one that I approach from both cognitive and educational psychology perspectives. I also teach students to implement a combination of methods including but not limited to: critical thinking, distributed and interleaved practice, applications of transfer-appropriate processing, self-explanation, as well as how and when to practice test, so that they may take charge of their learning and success.

Why Work with Me?

I completed a rigorous, international private school curriculum for both my elementary and secondary education. I then graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas A&M University with a degree in educational psychology/biology. Afterwards, I studied post-bachelor organic chemistry and conducted research in the area of molecular recognition that centered on the utilization of porphyrins to develop synthetic hosts for chiral and non-chiral anionic and neutral guests. In addition to organic chemistry research, I have experience developing and statistically analyzing phenomenological studies in the field of social and educational psychology, and in particular, studies concerning personal and social identity, collective emotions and their association with intergroup relations, how to foster a global citizenship identity in the classroom, and the psychological basis for prejudice. I have been fortunate to have been a part of an epidemiological team in Tanzania collecting data to assess the effectiveness of healthcare program implementation in various parts of Africa.

What does this mean for you?

It means that I have a very diverse educational and professional background and have experience with a wide array of academic disciplines, I know exactly what it takes to succeed in those disciplines, and I can teach you how to do the same. I use advance techniques (most that other tutors do not) that make me very successful working with individuals ranging from nurses having to complete statistics and clinical research methods, to elite business men and women wanting to improve their written business communication skills, to college students taking algebra, statistics, chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, psychology, and physics, to students needing help with essay structuring, scientific writing, and research formatting - to students wanting to score in the top percentiles of standardized testing. I also have experience working with and devising creative educational strategies for students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and Asperger's.

I do not just tutor subjects or merely teach content: I focus on the goals of my clients and how to efficiently and effectively get them results. I believe in my students, help them see their unique potential, and maximize their strengths. I approach each and every student's needs using a holistic approach that fuses my educational psychology background with my unique ability to determine any underlying issues a student is having with a particular subject area or academia in general that may not be so obvious, in order to develop an individual plan maximizes his or her success. For example: numerous clients come to me requesting math tutoring. What they often do not realize when we first begin sessions together is that the ability to do math well is generally not some innate ability that some individuals lack. Rather, every student approaches math with a particular emotional valance and confidence level that varies depending on their prior experiences with math. This emotional valence directly effects both scores and learning outcomes. I help people correct issues when it comes to this as well as teach individuals to problem solve while helping to build their confidence and self-efficacy when it comes to even the toughest subjects. I truly enjoy helping people succeed.

My Rates and Policies

My rates reflect my expertise and results in this industry. I have a cancellation policy of 3 hours prior to a lesson, otherwise you will be billed a $50 charge. I am often very booked, and appreciate ample time as far as cancellations so that I may accommodate other clients who are waiting. However, I am also a mother of four children and understand what it means to have to have to juggle life's circumstances, so I take into consideration that sometimes things just happen.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

MCAT

MCAT is one of the subjects that I tutor most frequently. I focus on the test-taking and critical analysis skills required to obtain a high score on the MCAT. I use a combination of methods to ensure students are prepared including passage analysis, FSQ drills, scientific literature analysis, advanced test-taking tips, and content review. I am also partnered with two other top Wyzant tutors for MCAT tutoring, and we provide a daily group that is designed to target the highest yield topics on the MCAT. The daily group is 30 minutes long, online and recorded so that students can review the video at their convenience; the teaching is interactive and students can ask questions during the mini-lecture. The group is designed to be affordable and a great way to keep MCAT material fresh until your test day!

Study Skills

I have many years and hundreds of hours of experience teaching students effective study skills. Teaching these skills is an integral part of my success formula, and one that I approach using my background in cognitive and educational psychology. Drawing on these perspectives, I teach students a number of methods that they can implement long-term including but not limited to: critical thinking, distributed and interleaved practice, applications of transfer-appropriate processing, self-explanation, as well as how and when to practice test, so that they may take charge of their learning and success.
