About James

For me teaching is learning. I have tutored since I was in second grade. For the past 20 years, I have worked as a professional tutor and teacher and as an attorney. I tutor MCAT, LSAT, PCAT, GMAT, GRE, Calculus and high school level math subjects, writing, grammar, Bar Review, Statistics, Economics, History, and 1L law courses. I have taught in six countries including the U.S., Mexico, Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. I have taught in Texas, New York, Virginia and California.

I build a very strong rapport with my students because I teach them how to build theories in the subjects in which they are interested. A theory is something special: the difference between a theory and a belief and/or hypothesis is that a theory holds seven attributes: 1) It out to be simple; 2) it must be premised in articulable first principles; 3) it must make clear and specific predictions; 4) it must be testable; 5) it must be constantly tested; 6) it must be correctable; and 7) it must be continually corrected at the level of your fundamental first principles. This approach to learning is powerful because it helps the student to feel engaged... to become part of the process of learning. Furthermore, it teaches the student how to become an autodidact... to continue to teach themselves for the years to come. My students generally see my role as more of mentor than tutor.

For example, when you look at the the moon, you should ask yourself, "why do I always see the same face?" The answer "because the moon turns at the rate that the earth rotates" cannot satisfy.... Such an answer states a mathematical correlation, but does not provide the theoretical understanding that allows the student to predict answers to similar questions.

Or to the question "Light slows down when it enters a medium other than space, such as water. Projectiles such as bullets do the same thing. But when a bullet emerges out the other side, it does not speed back up. Light does. Why?"

Or to the question "What does the law of contracts teach us about good business practice... about how we ought to conduct a business meeting?"

I have an online classroom and can meet students all over the world for distance tutoring.

I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I have a J.D. from University of Texas. I have passed both the New York Bar and the Texas Bar. I have tutored for Bar Exam before.

I have taught and tutored MCAT for close to three years. I have been a professional tutor for over 20 years. I scored above the 95th percentile on the MCAT. I have tutored Physics and Chemistry for several years. My students always speak very highly of the experience of tutoring with me. I strive to teach not mnemonics but theory... the underlying theory that allows students to visual and create formulas and to predict reactions in a way that allows the MCAT to unfold for them. I remind my students of the reasons that they came to love science in the first place... because of the excitement of discovering and creating theories that explain the world around them.
