About Victor

I offer clear explanations tailored to the learner. I enjoy demonstrating the process of building the relevant concepts at hand, so that the learner is guided as if by an usher, shedding light to the path ahead through the aisles of a dark auditorium to swiftly arrive at the seat at the start of a performance.

As a private tutor, academic mentor, community outreach instructor, university teaching assistant/instructor in mathematics & foreign language, as well as a parent, I have been a practicing student of effective teaching and learning for over 25 years. Post-tutorial and end-of-semester feedback by former students and parents have often included exuberant appreciation for having helped reach their goal of understanding.

A few of my students have distinguished themselves by reaching the top 10 in the state at open mathematics competitions. Many have progressed to pursue studies (often with scholarships) in demanding technical disciplines at leading institutions including aerospace engineering at U of Illinois, actuarial science and computer science at Purdue, cyber security at Carnegie Mellon, and pre-med at Case Western Reserve. Many have also been admitted to UC Berkeley, UCLA, Emory, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Imperial College of London, and Yale.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

For five years, I have successfully tutored in a region where, traditionally, the ACT was the main college admissions test accepted by universities. I have guided many students to improving their scores by significant margins in a relatively short period of time, thereby increasing the likelihood of gaining admission to a college of their choice.

ACT Science

For four years, I have successfully tutored in a region where, traditionally, the ACT was the main college admissions test accepted by universities. I have guided many students to improving their scores by significant margins in a relatively short period of time, thereby increasing the likelihood of gaining admission to a college of their choice.

Algebra 1

I have successfully guided hundreds of students in deeply understanding algebraic concepts and mastering the techniques of algebraic problem solving, often supplementing the curriculum with related alternative perspectives where relevant.

Algebra 2

I have successfully guided hundreds of students in deeply understanding algebraic concepts and mastering the techniques of algebraic problem solving, often supplementing the curriculum with related alternative perspectives where relevant.

ASVAB

After completing basic military training, I served abroad as an air force officer for three years, earning several outstanding service awards from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Since then, I have successfully guided many students in improving their ASVAB scores by significant margins in a relatively short period of time, thereby increasing their likelihood of entering the military service of their choice.

Calculus

I was an instructor at the Department of Mathematics for 5 academic terms. Students in my sections of approximately 30 students generally performed well above average on uniform mid-term and final exams administered course-wide in lecture courses with enrollment exceeding 500 students. Students have provided very positive end-of-semester feedback on their learning experiences in both differential and integral calculus.

Career Development

I have served as a mentor at the Mathematics & Science Student Center at Cabrillo College and provided academic and career guidance to students aspiring to enter a field of their choice. In my own search for an alternative career as a career changer, I pursued a 2nd graduate degree and had ample opportunities to engage in various career guidance literature and activities at the University of Michigan Career Center. What I took away from my experience can be summarized in a quote which I believe provides an anchor to career selection and pursuit: Where your talents meet the needs of the world, therein lies your vocation.

Differential Equations

I have taken a rigorous 1-year course sequence in linear algebra & differential equations for mathematics and science majors as an undergraduate at a liberal arts college recognized nationally for its academics. I received a solid A for my coursework in both semesters and have successfully assisted my peers in understanding the various concepts and methods used to prove theorems and/or solve problems.

Geometry

I received a grade of A+ in high school geometry offered through a local university extension course in the summer between 9th and 10th grade. Since then, I have successfully guided dozens of students in deeply understanding geometric concepts and mastering the techniques of rigorous two-column as well as indirect counter-positive proofs, often supplementing the standard or honors-level curriculum with related alternative perspectives where relevant.

German

I lived in Germany for 5 years during my formative years. In addition to elementary school, I attended Beethoven Gymnasium, a leading college prep school in Bonn, and earned very good grades. I continued to take German classes in high school in the U.S. and received a score of 5 on the AP German exam. I have since taken college courses in Advanced German & Translation as well as in German Literature. I also completed a 1-year sequence of graduate courses in Business German Practices and passed a formal certification test in Business German (Pruefung Wirtschaftsdeutsch International) offered by the Goethe Institute.

GRE

I achieved a perfect score of 800 on GRE Math while applying for Ph.D. programs in Mathematics Education. Since then, I have guided many students to improving their performance on the mathematics portion of the GRE as well as GMAT.

Linear Algebra

I have taken a rigorous 1-year college course sequence in linear algebra & differential equations for mathematics and science majors. I received a solid A in both semesters and have successfully assisted my peers in understanding the various concepts and methods used to prove theorems and/or solve problems.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel professionally almost daily over the past 10 years to perform detailed analysis of complex and voluminous data, and also to present summary findings in various reports at a leading consulting firm and at top insurance companies. I enjoy sharing my knowledge to assist others to become more efficiently productive.

Physics

After receiving a score of 5 on the AP Physics B Exam as a junior in high school, I had majored in physics at UCLA for two years, taking honors courses with laboratory components (using the same textbook as was used at the California Institute of Technology). I have guided many students to success in learning physics since then.

Prealgebra

I have successfully guided dozens of young and old students in building and sufficiently completing the arithmetic foundation leading to deeper understanding of algebraic concepts and later mastery of algebraic problem solving.

Precalculus

I was an instructor at the Department of Mathematics for 5 academic terms. Students in my sections of approximately 30 students generally performed well above average on uniform mid-term and final exams administered course-wide in lecture courses with enrollment exceeding 500 students. Students have provided very positive end-of-semester feedback on their learning experiences in advanced algebra and trigonometry in preparation for calculus.

Probability

After completing a second master's degree in mathematics focusing on actuarial science (applied mathematics related to finance and insurance), I passed a series of rigorous professional exams on probability, financial mathematics, and financial economic models offered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA Exam P, Exam FM, and Exam MFE). Since then, I have guided many students to success in probability topics in the context of AP or college statistics courses as well as admissions tests.

PSAT

I have successfully guided many students in improving their PSAT scores by significant margins in a relatively short period of time, thereby increasing their likelihood of reaching the finals of the National Merit scholarship Program.

SAT Math

I have successfully guided many students in improving their SAT Math scores by significant margins in a relatively short period of time, thereby increasing the likelihood of gaining admission to a college of their choice. Many of my former students have attained a perfect score on the SAT Math Level I and Level II Subject Tests also.

Statistics

After completing a second master's degree in mathematics focusing on actuarial science (applied mathematics related to finance and insurance), I passed a series of rigorous professional exams on probability, financial mathematics, and financial economic models offered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA Exam P, Exam FM, and Exam MFE). Since then, I have guided many students to success in statistics topics in the context of AP or college statistics courses as well as admissions tests.

Trigonometry

I have successfully guided hundreds of students in deeply understanding trigonometric concepts and mastering the techniques of trigonometric problem solving, often supplementing the standard or honors-level curriculum with related alternative perspectives where relevant.
