About Bob

Bio

I love to share "Aha" moments with my students!

I have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston. I taught both classes and labs while a graduate student and continued to teach Electrical Engineering at UH for 14 years after graduation. I am proud of the high scores I earned in the student evaluations that were administered by the department. While teaching in the EE Department I taught a wide range of classes but specialized in the graduate electronics sequence.

When our kids came along my wife and I home schooled them for several years and I taught science and math in a Home School partnership in my area.

I enjoy teaching. When teaching math and physics I try to relate the material to real world applications so that my students understand not just the how but the why of a subject. I do my best to make the material interesting and relevant. I have written a book on calculus, Essential Calculus with Motivational Problems, that reflects my effort to bring practical applications into my teaching.

During my career as an independent consultant I specialized in electronic circuit and system design and optimization. As a result of my varied experience I have presented and published 28 technical papers and hold 20 patents. During this time I used computers extensively, programming real world solutions using a variety of programming languages.

I look forward to helping you learn.

Computer

Computer Programming,

Computer Programming

I have programmed engineering applications including circuit analysis and optimization, web pages, and microcontrollers.
Fortran,

Fortran

I have used FORTRAN for several numerically intensive programming projects. I used FORTRAN to develop a circuit analysis and optimization program. I have developed several digital filter design programs written in FORTRAN.
Linux,

Linux

I started using Linux at kernel version 0.9 - before it was officially released at Version 1.0. I maintained a 6 workstation network for a non-profit for more than 10 years. This effort including training, selecting software, updating software, as well as writing and configuring various applications for our users. I have experience with the Red Hat, CentOS, and Ubuntu distributions and currently use CentOS extensively. I program and maintain several hosted web sites based on Linux.
Perl,

Perl

I have used Perl extensively. I maintain a comprehensive set of database scripts that are used on several websites (using MySql database engine). I use Perl to study stock investments, create data driven SVG images, as a BASH shell scripting language, to create graphic files (using gnuplot), and other diverse applications.
SQL,

SQL

I have developed several on-line database applications using MySQL and PERL. These include support of a national non-profit through custom programming of volunteer records and case notes databases and reports.

He was good

He was a knowledgeable and patient tutor. Bob is very patient and willing to work with my busy schedule. He has definitely helped me with his Linux class and also offered scripting helpful hints! Bob returns my emails and phone calls in a timely manner.

Donald, 1 lesson with Bob

He's clearly an experienced engineer but more importantly, an experienced tutor.

Bob helped me go through and understand a circuit that was above my head at the start of the lesson. I definitely understood it by the end. He's very knowledgeable and if needed, will do research before your planned lesson.

Lev, 1 lesson with Bob

Prepared, knowledgeable, helpful!

Bob was on time, prepared, flexible, persistent with our questions. He helped us solve a somewhat complicated problem in our electronic circuit simulation software. Thank you so much!
