Let me start by saying that I still have a passion for what I do everyday and that is teaching math! I have taught Math for 21 years, of which 7 of those have been 5th grade and 14 of them have been 6th grade. I love teaching the kids who struggle with math as I never understood it at their age either. I have found that having had the same struggles as a 5th and 6th grader has allowed me to better reach all of my students. I use various methods to help each and every kid learn. I want them to know that they can learn the same things as the other kids, but it may take them more time to process or maybe they just need to be taught a different method. I am here to provide them with those other methods, tricks or processes.
Also, I am a mother of 3 girls who each excel at math. I use them as my example of what i should be doing with my students. I always ask myself "would I teach this to my girls?" Again, I use many strategies to teach a concept. One example would be the steps for division. We stand up and do a little dance to remember them. I use technology, manipulatives, poems, puzzles, foldables and sometimes just plain memorization techniques. Whatever it takes for them to get it is what we aim for. Each child is different, so what works for one may not work for another. I have high expectations and a big heart. I WANT your child to learn. I will give 100% of myself and expect the same from my students and their parents as we are all working together for the success of your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
