About Charles

Bio

I have been playing guitar for over twenty years, went to some amazing schools, had some great teachers, and over time I have collected quite the wealth of musical knowledge to share. I love to learn about and teach all kinds of music from pop, to jazz, to heavy metal, to classical equally.

I approach music from a pragmatic standpoint; you will only learn what you desire to learn, so don't force the alternative. If your main goal is to strum along while singing your favorite songs...

I approach music from a pragmatic standpoint; you will only learn what you desire to learn, so don't force the alternative. If your main goal is to strum along while singing your favorite songs awesome. Maybe you want to be the next virtuoso rock star, let's get to work. I'll help you reach your goals, and maybe slip a bit of music theory in along the way.

I try to make every lessons as fun as possible, and I try to bring context to the stuff that may not be quite as interesting (not fun implied). I have found that just about every student has the same goal, to get better (otherwise they wouldn't be taking lessons) but learning unfamiliar, and often tedious concepts, do not appeal to the amateur or novice musician .

While students early on may not appreciate, or care about, some of the BORING aspects of music, they are often more than willing to add that these concepts to their practice regime, if they understand (and believe) it will make them a better musician.

So while I stand by my word that I do not force a student to practice boring music concepts, I believe that my students quickly develop an appetite for taking on these tasks without hesitation.

Guitar,

Guitar

I studied guitar in (and graduated from) the renowned High School for the Performing and Visual Arts' (Houston Texas) jazz program. I received an associates degree in Music Education from Houston Community College with a focus on guitar (particularly classical). I've had over twenty years of experience in writing, recording, playing, teaching, and studying music. I have studied using tons of methods, and been introduced (and influenced by) all kinds of music. I enjoy teaching because there is nothing like seeing the joy in someone's face when they finally START TO GET IT. So many people want to learn, but are discouraged or intimidated by faulty teaching methods or in trying to wade through the enormous amount of teaching material that exists. It's my goal to remove that intimidation, and help students find their own voice as a musician. As far as teaching experience is concerned, I was a music theory tutor throughout college, taught group guitar and music classes for a local charter school's after school program for a semester, and have taught free-lance on and off for the last ten years.
