Greetings! Greetings! I am new to Texas, bringing with me a doctorate in English, and extensive experience teaching writing and literature to students who come with a range of skills and interests (in addition to my academic writing, I am also a published author of creative-non fiction and poetry). For the last several years, I have guided home-schooled students, and college students through literary study both as a teacher in my own classroom as well as in my role as a writing consultant at Vanderbilt University's writing studio, in addition to private clients. I bring to the table a nimble teaching philosophy and a calm, compassionate approach as an educator.

Though my primary field of expertise is in English, I also have experience tutoring Spanish and in Math (middle school and below; I am open to reducing my rate for these subjects). I am available to hand-craft individual lessons for students if the need is ongoing supplemental support, or otherwise, I am happy to help demystify the process of writing and learning. I offer patient support to students as they navigate independent study in writing and literature. I typically teach students who are at a middle school to early college skill level how to perform close, attentive reading and with associated critical writing. I also coach students through college essays and applications by honing in on interests and talents--to be frank, working in a university setting for so long has helped me gain insight into the college admissions process. So far, I have had a good track record of helping people get into school.

First and foremost, I try to make writing and reading fun! ("Fun?," you wonder, eyebrow raised.) I'm all about helping you figure out the things that spark your interest, and then helping you reflect that interest on the page. Having recently wrapped up my Ph.D. in English, I come to the table with a wealth of knowledge about literature and writing. But more importantly, I bring a wide range of ideas for skill-building. Public Speaking

The transition from public school teaching to public healthcare was precipitated by my work in what would become a nationally recognized direct service organization (the purpose of this organization was to offer compassionate patient care in hospital settings). Because of this, I have spent many years doing public speaking engagements at conferences, in media interviews, and in the classroom. This experience behooved me during my time in graduate school, and now again as I return to my previous experience working in medical education. I regularly have to present complex ideas in front of large groups of people. I'd love to share the pearls of wisdom I have gleaned along the way.

Proofreading

One of the most significant aspects of my teaching career was working at the Vanderbilt Writing Studio as a consultant. There, I worked with students with a variety of needs and requests: frequently, these requests were for help with proofreading and grammar. In addition to this, I have maintained my own writing projects, which include a book of oral histories (published by Feminist Press), posts for an online journal, a dissertation, and an academic edited anthology. I also use a variety of tools to help younger or more inexperienced writer increase their proofreading skills.

Ph.D. in English with a focus on theatre, film, contemporary literature, and critical theory. My research is contingent on a practice known in the field as "close reading," which means paying deep attention to the details that appear in text and other aesthetic mediums. I teach these skills to students across grade levels (6th grade to university level) using a number of specially-created tools and skill drills to help them adopt a long-term reading practice.

Knowledgeable and Patient Writing Tutor!

My daughter looks forward to her tutoring sessions with Lauren. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an experienced tutor that makes learning fun.

Joe, 2 lessons with Lauren

Fantastic Tutor!

Lauren took the time to get to know my 2 high school boys who needed help with their writing skills. She really develops a rapport with her students, which is the foundation of motivating teenagers. We feel very lucky to have found such a caring and capable tutor!

Ken, 15 lessons with Lauren

Intelligent, patient, and committed tutor

Lauren helped me with organizing and polishing my final draft essay--which was completely a mess when first working on it. We went through the texts, and helped me understand what I had to do in order to finish the assignment. She’s very helpful in a way that she definitely knows what she’s doing and how to guide a lost student. Recommended. 👌

Saika, 3 lessons with Lauren

Very helpful and insightful tutor

Lauren is one of the few tutors who really understands writing, the college application process, and uses time efficiently to help. Already on my first session, she gave me very specific advice on how to improve my college essays and helped me brainstorm. I highly recommend her as a tutor!

Srini, 3 lessons with Lauren

Very helpful, knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Lauren was great at explaining some very difficult concepts and helping me outline steps for writing my archival analysis paper. I would recommend her for writing help.
