My love of teaching comes from a love of life long learning. I truly believe that an individuals should never stop learning. I learn something new everyday. I have been in education for over 20 years and have taught in the public schools for 13 of those years. I acquired my first college degree several years ago in History and Health Education, with state teaching certifications in History, Health, Physical Education, and Early Childhood--Prekindergarten and Kindergarten. I continued to add Texas teaching certifications with my English as a Second Language and grades 1 to 8 general classroom. More recently I finished my Masters program in Elementary Reading and Literacy. Last year I added my grades 8 to 12 grade Language Arts and Reading certification.
I love teaching but I know most of the time there is little time for that all important ingredient of one to one time. This is where I can provide that one to one time. I provide home and class notebooks with feed back after each lesson. Work will be assigned to do outside of tutoring. This will be mostly reading and writing on an individual basis.
I have taught elementary English Language Learners for several years in my public school classrooms. I have enjoyed seeing them move right into the bilingual selves that they were meant to be. I firmly believe that reading is the key to leaning and knowledge which leads to the flip side of that coin, where vocabulary is the key to reading well and with understanding.
I have many years of experience with young children in a learning environment. I have also worked for the last eight years in a after school reading program as one of their instructors. I really enjoy the one to one work which produces those fast results.
With my experience in Early Childhood classes I have seen the reading process first hand. The first thing a younger reader wants to do is read by themselves. I can help fulfill this dream with phonics and sight word recognition. When developmental appropriate reading and writing go hand in hand to accomplish this goal.
I specialize in tutoring 4 to 9 year old students. I also would like to teach adults who want to learn to read and write English. My love of teaching comes from a love of life long learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
