About Jingyi

I spent my first 20 years in Tianjin, my hometown in China, until finishing college education. Holding a Bachelor of Arts degree from Nankai University majoring in Chinese Language and Literature and a B.S. from the neighboring college, Tianjin University, minoring in Business Administration, I like both pure liberal arts and scientific social studies. After that, I pursued a master degree in Critical Asian Humanities at Duke University.

With a passion for acquiring knowledge worldwide, I have traveled to more than 14 countries. 4 years ago, I visited the Vienna headquarter of the United Nations and the European Union offices in Brussels, which inspired my life goal of fully dedicating myself to helping people. I believe that culture is borderless, cross-language, and cross-country.

I tutored two American undergraduate students from University of Wisconsin-Madison in the summer of 2013 under a language program jointly held by Nankai University, Tianjin Normal University, and UW-Madison. Guiding them around Tianjin's places of interests, I built a strong connection with the American students. Rather than positioning myself in a teacher-student relationship, I prefer to regard students as friends. I'm more willing to help and talk to them than merely giving instructions. I also talked with lots of Chinese language learners at Duke. Hence, the difficulties in learning Chinese for either heritage students and Americans are not new to me. I am an experienced tutor to help you with Chinese, one of the most difficult languages in the world.

China is a great country with 5000 years of history and more importantly, it is one of the fastest developing countries in the world. I will not only help you with speaking, listening, reading and writing, but also, I can tell you various updated stories about China. Meanwhile, I will also tell you interesting anecdotes of Chinese idioms, slangs and ancient stories so that it makes the learning process more accessible and memorable. You can learn more and faster with me than through textbooks. Besides, we can become friends after class.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I hold a bachelor degree's in Chinese language and literature in Nankai University in China. I studied linguistic courses and traditional Chinese literatures from my college. In addition, I also got high scores on the Standard Mandarin test in Tianjin. In 2013 summer, I tutored two American college students in Chinese speaking and writing. From that job, I gained practical experience of tutoring students. With strong interests in cultural studies, I had a couple of language partners during my studies in the U.S. By talking to them frequently, I'm familiar with the difficulties and obstacles of learning Chinese as a foreign language. I've also tutored kindergarten kids in basic Chinese.
