About Richard

Hello! Are you the parent of a struggling student or perhaps looking to brush up on a thing or two yourself? Let's talk about it and see if we're a good match for one another. I've helped hundreds over the years with mathematical comprehension and can effectively communicate and explain concepts in a way tailored to my audience, whether elementary level, high school or adult learners. Basic number sense, number theory, arithmetic, algebra, geometry through integral calculus...I'm the patient instructor you wish you'd always had.

I'm passionate about promoting S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, math) education wherever and whenever I can. I presently teach math in a G.E.D. preparation program for adult learners in Arlington, TX. I find this to be a tremendously rewarding program and enjoy helping people help themselves. There's nothing more satisfying to me personally than seeing that "a ha!" moment on a student's face.

You have every right to expect results and the assurance that your time will never be wasted. I'll begin by assessing your specific needs and background in order to develop goals and a realistic plan to achieve them. I prepare for every session in advance in order to ensure our time together is maximized.

Special requirement regarding minor children: I am happy to tutor your child in your home but require that an adult parent, guardian or representative be present in the home at the time. If an adult can't be present then I'll be happy to tutor your child in a public facility (such as your local library).

Let's get started!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

Algebra is really where things go right or wrong most of the time. Algebra is foundational to exploring any form of higher math and is of course a requirement for every High School and almost every University student. I take an intuitive approach to Algebra that focuses less on doing it by steps and emphasizes relationships between things.

ASVAB

I've taught and coached the ASVAB since 2008, both in classroom environments and in one-on-one sessions. While on active duty myself, I volunteered as an English and Mathematics teacher in the Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST) program. My students improved their General Technical (GT) scores by an average of 15 points.

STAAR

I've gained a lot of exposure to the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) since I began tutoring in Texas in 2012. Preparation for this assessment is always a hot topic with my students and their parents as the mandatory test dates approach.

The STAAR is often challenging regardless of grade level. I've consequently devoted considerable energy into understanding the administration of the test itself, what the results mean and what strategies to apply to maximize a student's score.

Great tutor — Richard saved the day! I was taking an algebra class and a "friend" had offered to help me through it. Well that didn't happen. So I contacted Richard and he pulled through this class in only a week and three sessions! He is patient and never once made me feel inadequate which is very important to me. Very flexible on the scheduling and goes above and beyond to help. I highly recommend! ...
