Dordt College (History)
Calvin Theological Seminary (Master's)
Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University (PhD)
I enjoy learning and helping others learn. There is nothing quite like seeing a student's eyes light up when they finally understand a concept. I hold a Bachelor's degree in History, a Master's in Divinity, and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). In addition, I have two years experience working as the director of a college placement office that oversaw resume design, GRE and graduate school preparation, and job search skills.
Over the years, I've studied eight different languages and taught two in the classroom with great success (Hebrew and Greek). I have also tutored a variety of students in these languages. My teaching philosophy is based on modeling and developmental approaches to learning with a dash of humor thrown in for good measure. I believe that nearly any student can learn anything if the subject is broken down into manageable pieces and assimilated through repetition and the gradual addition of new material. At the end of the day, what I am doing is not only teaching a subject but also study skills. My goal is that students will be able to approach any task, topic, or language with confidence and find a way to teach themselves.
I am qualified to offer services in Hebrew, Greek, Bible/Religion, History, Writing, English grammar, and GRE (Verbal) preparation. I also have experience working with students applying to graduate school and can give advice on applications, personal statements, and writing samples. In terms of music and art, I can offer basic guitar and drawing lessons.
I am flexible with scheduling and willing to travel. While I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes. My preferred meeting place is a coffee shop. If students prefer a quieter environment, I am happy to make accommodations. I enjoy learning and helping others learn. There is nothing quite like seeing a student's eyes light up when they finally understand a concept. I hold a Bachelor's degree in History, a Master's in Divinity, and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible
I worked for two years as the director of Dordt College's Placement Office. I designed resumes, lectured on job searching, coordinated placement of certified teachers, organized interviews, edited student cover letters, maintained credential files, co-sponsored a job fair, counseled students on graduate school and GRE preparation.
As I noted under career development, I was the placement coordinator at Dordt College for two years in which time I counseled students on graduate school preparation. In addition, as someone who has multiple degrees, I am well aware of what is necessary to look for in colleges.
I took drawing lessons for one year. Since that time I have branched out into acrylic painting and sculpture in various media (clay, wood, and stone).
In teaching drawing, I focus on helping students learn how to "see" objects as basic shapes (circles, squares, spheres, boxes, cylinders, etc.) before adding details. I also teach the basics of perspective (vanishing points, foreshortening, etc.), the use of a pencil as a sighting tool, measurement drawing, action lines in figure movement, and basic human proportions.
I taught two sections of Classical Greek (Greek I and Greek II) to middle school students at St. Peter's Classical School in Fort Worth, TX. In addition, I have taken two years of college Greek, passed the Greek exam for my M.Div., and passed the Greek exam for my Ph.D.
I hold a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible. I passed the requisite Hebrew exam for my M.Div. I also passed the Advanced Hebrew Exam for my doctoral studies and received a "pass with distinction." In addition, I taught two semester of Hebrew at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. Finally, I tutored a rabbi
nic student in Hebrew for approximately a year.
As part of my M.Div. degree I have training in public speaking in an ecclesiastical setting. I speak in front of crowds of 15-150 people regularly and am currently in the ordination process for the Christian Reformed Church in North America. I have also lectured on speech construction and delivery.
I hold an M.Div. from Calvin Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Hebrew Bible (the full title is: Hebrew Bible, Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical Books, and Literature of Early Judaism). I read Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Ugaritic, Classical and Koine Greek, and Latin. I have also taught and tutored Hebrew and Greek within religious contexts.
As an author in the field of religion, I have a book in press with T&T Clark, and a chapter in another book soon to be published. I have also edited a monograph on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Finally, I have served as an intern pastor, an intern youth pastor, and a young adults minister. I am currently on the ordination track in the Christian Reformed Church of North America.
