I grew up in a musical family in beautiful New Zealand and developed a love for music early in life, beginning violin at the age of 5. After earning an undergraduate degree in music and performance violin at the University of Otago, I moved to the U.S. where I achieved successive graduate degrees in violin, chamber music and baroque violin at the University of Oregon, University of Colorado and Indiana University. I perform locally and nationally with various ensembles and orchestras. I have recently moved to Fort Worth and am excited at the opportunity to teach new students.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels, particularly beginners of any age. I can also be of special help to modern violinists who want to learn more about baroque style and performance practice. I aim not just to improve the technical and expressive abilities of each of my students, but to instill in them a love of music that will last a lifetime.
I have a quiet apartment from where I prefer to teach. Alternatively, I am happy to drive to your location if convenient. I can be flexible with teaching times, and while I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I'm happy to work with you to find a make-up lesson time. I look forward to hearing from you and to help you develop your skills as a violinist and musician! I highly recommend James. He is an excellent Violin teacher. He had greatly helped my son in just a short time. He is a beautiful musician, and is very mature, reliable and easy to communicate with. I have nothing but good things to say about James! We have never had a better violin teacher in 10 years of taking lessons.
James is an excellent tutor who conveys his proven violin and music knowledge to his student in a friendly and relaxed manor. I am well pleased to have James guide me in my efforts to master the violin.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in music/violin performance from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and three subsequent graduate degrees in the U.S: A Master's in Violin Performance from the University of Oregon, a Certificate in String Quartet Performance from the University of Colorado, and a second Master's degree in Early Music and Baroque violin from Indiana University. I have performed with orchestras such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and the Orchestra of New Spain (Dallas). I have experience teaching group and individual lessons to both children and adults.
