About Cheryl

As busy adults, we face many bothersome problems from day to day. I know for me, an annoying problem, is seeing the check engine light appear on my vehicle. When that occurs, I know that it will be a lengthy process of: going to the auto shop, waiting, and more money out of the budget.

As a tutor, I see areas each week that need to be maintained. These areas, if neglected, can cause problems down the road. Here are some major road blocks that I notice students struggle with from week to week.

K-1st grade: Phonics, writing sentences, spelling, and reading fluently

2nd -3rd: Comprehension, spelling, subtraction, and writing stories

4th-5th: multiplication, vocabulary, sentence structure, and test taking

6th- 7th : algebra, gathering facts, grammar, and writing a persuasive paper

These are skills they need now and for the future. I believe in building a strong learning foundation, so when the storm arrives, the students will remain confident.

Here are some of my strategies to help these students reach their goals.

I ask questions and teach them to question. (Critical Thinking)
I take a simple uncomplicated path to show them how to accomplish each task.
I am very honest with the students evaluation and teach the students to self evaluate.
I encourage them to keep trying and never give up.
I readjust my teaching to the student's learning style
I challenge them to practice, and give rewards for their diligence.

With these strategies, I have seen students grow and succeed! I know, if given the opportunity, I can do the same for many other students. With each success, I teach the students more and more. I can't tell you how many times a student said to me, "the teacher taught me this today, but I already knew it." If a student's mind is ready for the material, I teach them. Many times, they end up ahead of their class.

If this seems like the right fit for you, please give me a call. I would love to help you and your child reach new heights. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cheryl

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

In all the tests out there today, reading comprehension is the key to success. Teaching students to look for context clues and main ideas are essential to them building their skills.

Bible Studies

In 2001, I graduated with an associate degree in Biblical Studies. In the past, I taught several age groups the Bible. Teaching the 10 basic doctrines of the Bible is the first approach to helping them understand the Bible better.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked with elementary students for over 6 years in different school systems including Irving ISD. I aided, tested, and at times taught K-5. I enjoy aiding children in the learning and reading process. I am currently a volunteer in the Learning Zone in Arlington.

Phonics

Over the years, I have helped many students grow in their phonetic abilities. I have worked with K-2, in the public schools, for several years. If a student is not understanding the phonics, I will search for another way to help him or her. Usually, I address all the vowel sounds first and then I move on to consonant blends. I like the student to see how the words blend together. I, always, give them little sayings that will help them pronounce the word. For example, when two vowels go a walking the first one does the talking. In the word "road", we only hear the letter "O" sound. Usually, one method clicks with the student and they start to understand. I have been very successful in this area of teaching.

Public Speaking

For 3 years I was a member in the Cape Fear Toastmasters public speaking club. One year, I served as president of the club. In the past, I have had to speak in front of large groups of people. I received an "A" in my public speaking class, 1311 at Tarrant County College. Eye contact and self confidence are two important keys in addressing a group of people, and I can help you master these and other public speaking skills.

Religion

I am a graduate from a Bible College in N.C. I feel that I have a good base and knowledge to teach this subject. In the past, I have worked and taught at several churches in my community.

Special Needs

In Irving ISD and Arlington ISD, I assisted students with Special Needs. These particular student needed help in all subjects. I have administered the standardized testing for various Special Ed. students. I have been told, by other staff members, that I do a good job with keeping students on task. I am currently pursuing a teaching certification and I have many valuable training sessions from each school district.

Speech

For several years, I was involved in raising money for a non-profit mission. I had to speak in front of large groups. I had to learn several skill to insure success. I joined Toastmaster and later became the president of my local chapter.
