Do you need help with Mathematics - Calculus, Precalculus, Algebra, or Geometry, Test Prep - SAT math, ACT math, or GRE math?

I have a B.S. in Mathematics and taught at the high school level for 4 years. As an undergraduate student, I also tutored at UNT's math lab, where I found out that I had a knack for being able to come up with examples and explanations on the fly that would help clarify difficult concepts for students.

After teaching in the classroom for 4 years, I decided to return to school for a Masters of Engineering for a career change. I am currently a structural engineer specializing in mostly bridge design and inspection and some other heavy civil structural design. Engineering gives me a way to apply my skills in new and challenging ways, but I realized after working as a design professional that I missed the pure mathematics side of things!

I love tutoring because I get to see students' "Ah-Ha!" moments so much more frequently than as a teacher! It has also been very fulfilling to help struggling students turn their grades around and achieve success. Even more important to me is being able to give students that "Wow, I can do it!" feeling. If my availability matches yours, I'd love to help!

Personal:
I am the father to 2 beautiful daughters, and am so blessed by them. In addition to parenting, I enjoy camping, and participating in Bible Study Fellowship. I also love playing board games (Settlers of Catan and Pandemic in particular) and just love to laugh in general.

GRE

GRE

I can help on all sections of the GRE as far as test taking skills are concerned, but my focus on actual tested content is the math portion. When I reported my scores to UTA, they said they were some of the highest scores they had seen in some time! If it's been a while since your last math class, or you've had trouble with it in the past, let me help you boost your scores! It's actually very easy to improve your scores on the math portion of this test. It just takes a little time, practice, and persistence. If you have the motivation and drive to do well, I promise I can help you improve your math score. Before scheduling a tutoring session, I recommend buying a GRE prep book (like Princeton Review or something similar) and completing a practice exam in the allotted time. That way, you will 1) have a "baseline" score to be able to see improvement, and 2) know areas of weakness that we can spend more time on. I recommend starting to prepare for this test at least a couple of months before you plan to take it, so give yourself plenty of time and start early!

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra I for 2 years at Castleberry ISD. I am very skilled at presenting the material in a way that is easy for students to understand and remember well!
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I taught Algebra II for 2 years at Burleson ISD. I am highly skilled at the subject matter, as well as presenting it in a way that is easy to understand and remember for exams.
Calculus,

Calculus

This is (by far) my favorite class to tutor. I got to teach AP Calculus AB during my last year as a teacher at Castleberry High School. Hopefully my joy and enthusiasm for the subject will be infectious enough that you begin to love this subject as much as I do! For this class in particular, I recommend group sessions. If you and a friend or two are struggling, I'll reduce my rates and help everyone at the same time. The benefit of these small group sessions is that many times a friend will ask a question you didn't even realize you had! The drawback, of course, is that you don't get the 1 on 1 attention - if you feel like you have lots of specific questions, it may be better to have a session alone. Either way, I'm sure I can explain the subject matter in a way that's easy for you to understand.
Geometry,

Geometry

This is another one of my favorite classes to help students with! My experience has shown me that students who naturally "get" algebra tend to have a tough time in geometry, and vice-versa. As a high school geometry teacher, I learned techniques that helped these students who naturally had a harder time with the subject to understand the content better. Just like in algebra, there are usually many different ways to solve a problem, and I have the ability to explain concepts in as many ways as it takes! Geometry is usually easier for students who are visual learners, but that doesn't mean you're doomed if you're not in that category - it just means you need a different approach to learning the material!
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I would love to help your son or daughter to improve their pre-algebra skills - as a high school algebra teacher, I saw many areas that students were weak in that I had to reteach - a couple that come to mind are working with fractions and positive/negative integers. Over the years teaching, I was able to come up with some handy tricks and mnemonic devices that helped my students remember what to do in these (and other) situations.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I taught precalculus while a teacher at Castleberry High School in Ft. Worth, TX. Precal is definitely a challenging subject, just because the range of topics it covers is so diverse! Whether you're having trouble with the trig side of it, or any of the other topics, I can help explain the material in a clear and easy to understand way!

Whether you prefer the legend of the old Indian named SOH CAH TOA, or "Silly Old Horse Came A Hoppin' Through Our Alley", I can help you improve your grades in this subject, as well as your understanding in general. My favorite part of trig was proving the identities - if this (or any other area) gives you trouble, stop getting frustrated, and let Joel Darr the Math Starr help!

Helpful!

Joel really broke the problems down for me and helped me understand it all. I was lost in my work and nervous for my upcoming test. Joel came and helped me with my last minute questions and I am thankful for that. I felt very good going into my test. Thank you!

I Now Feel Confident

Everything. I started so behind on this topic I thought there was no possible way I was going to reach my academic milestones. Now. I feel confident I will make the. And possibly exceed expectations.

Tutor is wonderful!

Both my daughter and I are very happy with our math tutor. He really communicates well with the kids. He's also great at communicating with me his observations after each session. It's a good match for us. Extremely pleased. Now, they're in the second year of tutoring and how great is it that Joel is able to help her with chemistry and algebra? I'm so grateful we were referred to Joel!

Valuable lesson in just 2-1/2 hours!

I had Joel work with my two daughters, one a college student, and the other preparing to take the SAT exam. Joel spent 2-1/2 hours with them on their first lesson with him, and my oldest daughter felt much more confident for her upcoming college classes. She's already decided she wants Joel to keep working with her as long as she needs the assistance. My youngest daughter benefited by having Joel give her tips on taking the SAT, and she worked problems during her session, and Joel would assist as she ran into road blocks. She too will continue to have Joel work with her to bring her H.S. grade back up to an A! Thanks Joel!
