As an experienced classroom teacher, writer and editor, I have instructional expertise and excellent rapport with students at all levels. I have worked as an SAT English test prep teacher and tutored and coached students in all areas of English: critical reading, comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing.
My approach is to meet each student on his or her level and then work patiently and consistently to build and reinforce each student's skills, understanding and confidence. I offer a variety of practice materials and sample tests, always encouraging students to ask questions and get the explanations that will help them develop test-taking strategies and insights.
I believe that my "can-do," positive attitude encourages students and helps them believe that they can and will be successful. In particular, it has been most gratifying to hear from students that they improved their SAT English test scores after I have worked with them. My son has only had 3 sessions with Arlene but feels that she has provided very useful strategies for the SAT's.
Arlene R. provided SAT reading, vocabulary and writing review for my daughter. She covered essay responses and ways to improve and expand upon the essays. The lessons also included vocabulary lists with words grouped according to negative and positive meanings and also words presented in groups of opposite meanings. She purchased an SAT Critical Reading workbook for my daughter and focused on strategies and clues for answering specific types of questions: sentence completion, reading passages and grammar and usage. Also, sentence completion practice sets were used for explanations and specific practice in selecting the correct response. Arlene's sessions were always very thorough and she exhibited patience and understanding when working with my daughter. She is clearly very knowledgeable of the SAT test and format.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an experienced educator and tutor, I begin helping students prepare for the ACT English and Reading tests by assessing their skill levels and determining how to best help them within their specific time frames. I provide general test-taking tips and review concepts and strategies and “model” how to select the correct answer by working through sample questions and brief passages with students. Knowing why one of the answers is correct helps each student build a foundation of confidence that leads to positive outcomes. Overall, my approach focuses on review and timed practice accompanied by explanation and feedback.
I have a State Teaching Certification, K-6.
