Tutoring is a chance to fulfill an integral role in an individual's future. You may notice that I did not say a tutor helps someone "navigate the road to success" or "climb to the top." By "integral role" I mean having the ability to contribute to someone's life experiences in a significant way. In no way can a tutor create the desire in a student to achieve higher levels of understanding. I believe there is truth in the statement "when the student is ready, the teacher appears."
A tutor can, however, build upon a student's willingness to learn. When a student asks for help, it is my personal philosophy that the student be guided and prompted to come up with the answer for themselves. This is all part of self-discovery and is essential in the learning process. It is very important for a tutor to demonstrate compassion, patience and the ability to view material from the student's perspective. I believe that a student will not care how much I know, until they know how much I care. When a student seeks out the help of a tutor, he/she can expect the tutor to be knowledgeable in his/her expertise. Even above a tutor's expertise, a student should expect encouragement, honesty, and trustworthiness.
I am currently employed by SWTJC (Southwest Texas Junior College) as an Adjunct ESL Instructor. I have taught students from the beginning level of English to the most advanced. When I was working as an English professor at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, I was also given the opportunity to teach various levels of English, including the TOEFL exam preparation course. I have experience in researching current teaching material, preparing exercises, developing short quizzes and study guides, and recommending methods of studying.
I previously worked for the Student Success Center at SWTJC as an English tutor. As a tutor, I specialized in proofreading (checking for spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.) and I enjoy editing as well. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and this has helped me to understand differences in word choice when reviewing written English.
Although most of my experience has been in teaching/tutoring English, I have had the opportunity to tutor Spanish at Berlitz, Int. and I have given private lessons as well. Spanish is my second language and I always look for ways to continue learning, whether through conversation with family, reading, or watching a program on television. I am a firm believer in the fact that life never stops teaching us lessons and we will always be learning. The difference is whether we stop to realize that truth and accept the responsibility it demands. Tutoring is a chance to fulfill an integral role in an individual's future. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
