I'm a professional writer/editor, a mom, and a caring and patient tutor. I have experience tutoring elementary school-aged children, both in Texas and in Virginia, helping them to complete and understand homework, improve reading comprehension and spelling, and learn the basics of writing good paragraphs and essays. As an editor for more than 25 years, I not only know the rules of grammar, I can help you or your child improve your writing, making it clearer, more succinct, and alive. I also have taught English to adult Spanish speakers, in community-sponsored programs and as a volunteer on an individual basis. My related background includes courses in English, writing and editing, participation in a Spanish immersion program, and volunteering in schools and with nonprofit organizations to assist children facing various challenges. I've been a Big Sister, worked in a preschool and after-school program, and, in general, have a compassionate heart for working with kids.
My son, who excelled in school, has graduated magna cum laude from college and embarked on a career in broadcast journalism, allowing me to pursue my calling of working at the U.S.-Mexico border. After living in Virginia for 30 years, I am happy to be settling here in El Paso, where I have volunteered for several months on two separate occasions, working with migrants, helping residents study for the citizenship exam, teaching English, and writing about issues at the border. I love the Hispanic culture, and I am looking forward to using my talents and experience to assist you, or your child, in being the best that you can be.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a professional editor, I have many years of experience in reading comprehension. Having to read and comprehend the work of other writers, and then edit it so that it's more easily understood and more succinct, is a talent in itself related to reading. I also have worked at the elementary school level as a tutor helping children with reading and other homework assignments.
My experience includes more than 25 years as a freelance writer/editor working for various businesses and publications. I've written about many subjects, from amusement parks to trucking and railroad issues, and I've conducted numerous interviews to write articles on a variety of topics.
