Hello there! I am Jean, I go by Jacob. I am just beginning with Wyzant and I cannot wait to help my students with their French adventure.

I was born in Haiti, I speak French, English and Haitian-Creole. I consider myself as very proficient in French. I attended schools in Haiti all the way to University where I graduate from the University of Haiti with a degree in Social Communication (Communication Sociale). All my schooling in Haiti was done using the French language. During the past 20 years, I continued to use the French language to communicate with other French speaking friends, conducted seminar, and teach foreigners. I also studied in Paris for six months. My ultimate goal is to connect students with not only the language, but with the francophone cultures and way of life.

I have always wanted to be a teacher. I enjoys sharing my knowledge of French and Spanish and my experiences from living abroad with my students.

I believe language learning should be fun and I try to make it fun. I use different methods, from songs and videos to having the students use the language in skits and projects. I understand that learning a language can be difficult, but the strategies I teach my students help them to be successful, such as comparing certain aspects of the language with English. I want students to make a connection and not be frightened to communicate.

The French language does not only connect you with the French culture of France but with about 128 millions of Francophones (another word for saying French speakers) in at least 29 countries across oceans and seas, according to La Francophonie dans le Monde 2006-2007 (2). This is without counting the one hundred million students from different age groups studying the French Language and the 71 million who speak it partially, according to the same source.

From my own little traveling experience I cannot even begin to tell you how rewarding it feels to be able to connect (sometimes in the middle of a crowd) with other French speaking people. Whether in Montreal, Canada, in the city of Brussels, Belgium or even in Johannesburg, South Africa, the common shared medium of the French language with other speakers has been for me a great ice breaking tool, and in many cases a great door opener.

But the door can only be open fully if you keep on gaining ground in your knowledge of the language. Keep on learning casually few new words everyday and reviewing them on the weekend for instance is very good practice to have. Having someone who speak the language that can help you is even better. But even when you don’t always have someone fluent in French next to you, today’s technology through DVD language settings and the internet makes things easier. So watch your favorite movie in French or follow the French news, read a book or an article written in French at your pace or catch some French music and see if you can pick up few words. It is really possible for you to immerse yourself into the French speaking culture from the very comfort of your home.

Through the French language, there is truly a whole world awaiting out there! So welcome aboard!
