My name is Pablo. I'm originally from El Paso, TX, but I lived in Los Angeles, CA for five years because I pursed a career in screenwriting. Although I am a writer, at heart I love helping people so I enjoy tutoring and instructing. I have been a tutor since the fall of 2001, and I have been a college instructor since the fall of 2007. I have worked at USC, LA Trade Tech College, UTEP, EPCC and Southwest University.
Even though I love writing, my passion is teaching. When my students develop an understanding of the skills and concepts, I can't help but crack a smile. I then know that they will keep this knowledge for a lifetime and perhaps one day, they will forward this information to one of their loved ones.
Even though I haven't had the privilege of tutoring children as much as I have tutored adults throughout my career, I was a substitute teacher, primarily working with grade school children, and I did get a chance to work with these children in the areas of reading and writing, in a one on one basis. Regarding reading, I would work with students using sight words in order for them to develop fluency, and regarding writing, I used to work on grammatical concepts, in order for the students to develop proper sentence structure. The bright smiles of every child would make the job very rewarding.
As far as tutoring adult students, I worked as a writing tutor from 2002--2007. Most of the students would want for me to look over their essays, and I would show them how to properly construct a theirs and how to write clear topic sentences. However, when there were more developmental issues, we would work on sentence structure, diction, run-on sentences, sentence fragments and other grammatical issues. My philosophy is one must learn to how to crawl before one must learn how to walk, and this applies with learning how to write. Students would show a tremendous improvement, no matter which level of writing they fell under.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
