About Sylvia

I am a certified teacher with 10 years experience. I taught 4th grade for six years, 1st grade for one year, and kindergarten for three years. I taught 90% of my kindergarten students to read at or above grade level, K-9 (Kindergarten at nine months) to 1.8 (First-grade at eight months). The students did not simply say words they were able to retell stories that were read to them and stories read independently. I taught them reading comprehension skills: main idea and details, compare and contrast, plot, character analysis, problem solving, setting, inferring and cause and effect. They also learned to ask academic relevant questions. I was just as successful in math testing at K-6 to 2.1. They learned to add and subtract to 10; to 18, 2x2 without regrouping; graphing; problem solving, geometry, to tell time, to identify coins, their value, to count money etc. As a fourth-grade teacher, I had to begin as far back as first-grade in writing so that the students learned proper grammar and sentence structure. In math, I had to begin as far back as second-grade to teach students to subtract with regrouping, place value, etc.

One of my strengths is learner: Which means, I love to learn! I will get to know your child's strengths and struggles as we work together to fill his or her gap(s). This will allow me to make the necessary adjustments to help them learn.

A second strength I possess is achiever: This means each session will start anew. We may have a tough session however I will not dwell on it, but I will attempt to teach that area of struggle in a different way.

Lastly, a great strength context: It means I will use all the knowledge and experience I have acquired to aid your child to succeed!

I will try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I do offer makeup classes.

My fee is perhaps a bit steep for many that are seeking help. If this is the case, I am willing to work within your budget on a case by case basis.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have passed the content area to be certified to teach K-6 through the State Board for Educators.

Elementary Math

I taught fourth grade math for six years. I also taught first grade math for a year. As well, I taught kindergarten math for three years. I also received training in the new Texas TEKS and Everyday Math, out of Chicago, Illinois.

Elementary Science

I taught the fundamentals of science for the fourth, first, and kindergarten grades. Also every nine weeks there was staff development training. I am also certified to teach elementary math.

Grammar

I taught fourth grade for six years wherein I prepared my students for the writing exam. I also received writing training at the University of Kansas and learned the "Learning Strategies Curriculum." This curriculum covers grammar, sentence structure, paragraph writing and much more.

Handwriting

I am a certified teacher who has taught for 10 years. The past three years I taught kindergartners to write their letters and take those letters to write words and then sentences. I also taught fourth grade for six years. At this time, I taught them to write cursive.

Phonics

I taught kindergarten for the past three years. I am a certified teacher. Phonics was an essential and fundamental part of teaching reading to my students.

Reading

I am certified for K-6 Generalist, EC-4 Generalist,by the State Board of Educators. I am also certified in English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies(4-8). As well as, English Language Arts and Reading (4-8)

Social Studies

I am certified in English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies (4-8). I taught Texas history while teaching the fourth grade. I also taught social studies when I taught first and kindergarten.

Spelling

As a fourth-grade teacher, I purchased the Johnny Can Spell curriculum so that I could teach the students the necessary rules for spelling. When I taught kindergarten, I used phonics, phonemic awareness, syllabication, sound boxes, and spelling rules to show my students how to use those skills to spell. Every Friday, during dictation, the students were required to put those skills to practice by writing the letter of the sound they heard, write the word given, and complete a sentence dictated to them orally.

Vocabulary

As a fourth-grade teacher, I used the vocabulary program from Reading Keys to enhance the students' vocabulary. I encouraged the use of the new vocabulary in their communication, verbal and in writing. When I taught kindergarten and first grade, I organized the students' high-frequency words so that they studied five words a week. At the end of the week, prior to dictation, they orally used the words in sentences. The students dictated sentences using the vocabulary words they had learned that week.

Writing

I taught fourth grade for six years. In this capacity, I prepared my students for the state writing exam. During this time, I maintained a 93% or better passing rate.

The confidence that our daughter has gained from working with such a great person is immeasurable. While the grades improved from 70's to a point shy off of the A Honor Roll, it's the sense of responsibility, respect, and understanding of concepts that our daughter now
