About Jamie

I was a communication major in college and graduated with a B.A. in communications and journalism. I currently work as an English tutor at a charter high school and have tutored subjects such as English, writing, reading, SAT prep, communications, journalism and social studies. I strive to assist you in all your academic endeavors to my full abilities and I will work hard to address any problems you have in the process.

My tutoring approach is simple. We sit down and you tell me what it is about the certain curriculum that you don't understand, have trouble understanding and discuss concepts that you struggle with. We will also highlight your strengths and what you do well so that we can find the right balance. I take things slow at each individual's pace and I will always pause from the lesson to explain something further, or answer any questions you may have.

As a parent myself, I want the absolute best for my children to succeed academically. That is my hope for you as well. I hope you will select me as your tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have excelled in the English language and the use of writing conventions since grammar school. I hope to be an English teacher once I'm certified and am proficient in the language. I am currently an English tutor for high school students and every day I see them becoming more proficient English language learners.

Grammar

I am a grammarian in my personal life and I feel it pertinent and extremely beneficial to learners to become proficient in grammar and the syntax it follows. I work every day with students who struggle using grammar and I help them construct meaningful sentences, speak properly and in the aggregate, help their overall knowledge of the mechanics of grammar.

Literature

I am qualified to tutor literature because not only have I read enough literature to fill up a classroom, but I also teach the construction and deconstruction of evaluation literature.

When a student is having trouble understanding a novel, we break it down into chapters and identify vocabulary, since that seems to be the one thing they struggle understanding. I also try to do visual character plots/development so that my student can easily and visually depict the character and their role in the story.

Proofreading

As a former journalist, proofreading was my life and before I wrote any news report, read any article, I had to proof read and fact check. I am a strong proof reader because I can identify the writing mechanics used in writing. I can easily help my students get to where they are proficient in proof reading. When I help a student proof read, we use a variety of methods to build upon, use their prior or existing knowledge and even watch videos that can be beneficial to them becoming more familiar with proof reading techniques.

Reading

Since I was little, reading was made an important avenue in my household. My parents would read to me and slowly, as I became a reader myself, I would read stories over and over again, improving my prosody and reading fluency. And, that is what is key to reading, improving fluency so that it can build your comprehension. I work with students daily to better their comprehension in reading so that they become fantastic readers, writers and learners.

Spelling

My closest friends and family will tell you that I am a spelling beast. I have always loved words and from a young age, was a keen speller. I think that spelling is important and try to do exercises with my students to better their own word attack skills and spelling skills. I like to use visual aids when helping when spelling so that they can see the mistakes and learn from them.

Vocabulary

Extending your vocabulary through writing, reading and language skills is beneficial to anyone, any age. I try to have a dictionary on hand when helping a student and apply a variety of mechanics to help them gain vocabulary skills.

One ways I tutor with students who have trouble with vocabulary is a visual site that allows them to manipulate the sounds in the word and come up with similar words, that will help them explore the meaning of the word.
