About Jeremy

I have several years of experience participating in jazz bands and worship teams as a bass guitarist, guitarist, drummer, and trombone player. I enjoy giving lessons in bass guitar (beginner - intermediate) and guitar (beginner) as well as ESL (grammar, vocabulary, reading & writing, and conversation). I am TESOL certified with Tutoring and teaching experience. Soon, I will complete a bachelor's degree in Bible and theology. One of my students always told me, "Easy is good!" One of the best ways to make learning and improving in a desired skill easier and more fun is to learn it right the first time. My goal has always been to teach as clearly and effectively as possible each lesson.

I'm flexible in my teaching methods, but I'm all about efficiency as well. I strive to give my students my best for their buck. At one time I gave several students free lessons provided they helped participate in my worship team. This helped provide me with team members, but it also helped them grow in their instruments at an accelerated rate as well.

I am still on good terms with all my former students, and I believe this is because of my genuine concern for their success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have graduated Level 1 INSTE (Institute of Theology by Extension), have led bible studies with youth, and I am currently taking biblical study courses. I read and study the Bible daily, a habit I've maintained for at least the last five years. I'm a firm believer that the best authority on the Word is the Word itself.

Composition (Music)

I have taken courses pertaining to songwriting, and I have written and produced my own music in the last 10 years. As a worship leader, I've had almost 15 years of experience arranging music to suit different ensembles. Also, due to the wide variety of instruments I play - bass guitar, guitar, piano, drums, and baritone - I can provide more holistic insight to songwriting. Music composition, to me, is very similar to writing for reading purposes, and my goal as an instructor is to help the student discover his/her "voice" and bring it forth in their music composition.

Ear Training

When I took ear training classes in college, I was always at the top of my class. When I sang in choir, I was often asked to help other members with various parts. My experience with various instruments as well as choral and solo singing performance has helped me to transcribe or reproduce music as I hear it.

General Music

I was always gifted in music, so when I took a fundamentals class I actually had the highest grade and tested out of the next successive music class. I still use music rudiments every time I practice or play an instrument, and I teach my students to do the same. Without general music, advanced music is very difficult to grasp.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for almost fifteen years and bass guitar for almost twenty years, and I still play both today. I've taken lessons and classes with both and given lessons on both instruments. I love calling my old students up and hearing them tell me they're still playing or reading their Facebook posts about a gig.

Music History

Every time we study music, we should study it's history as well. When I give music lessons, in whatever instrument, I teach music history alongside. Jazz bass, for example, has a rich history and many subgenres from gypsy jazz to folk jazz to swing, and when I use pieces of music from these different types of jazz, I also try to connect my students to the times and cultures of when the music was written. I've taken college level music history courses for one year.

Sight Singing

I excelled in my 2 years of sight singing classes in college, both tonally and rhythmically. When I teach an instrument, I include sight singing exercises with the lessons, such as having a student look at a piece of music and explaining the meter and key. Sight singing is like glancing at a map and recognizing references, and that's what I try to instill in my students.
