About Amy

Bio

I am a recent graduate of the University of North Texas who loves to teach! I have experience teaching music history and music appreciation in both a classroom setting and one-on-one. I look for different ways to approach teaching, but my preferred method is a hands-on approach. It is also important to me that students make connections between what they know and what they are learning, so that what they are learning is more meaningful to them.

My favorite thing about tutoring is that learning methods can be tailored to the student in ways that are not possible in a classroom setting. They have a chance to ask questions, and the tutor has the freedom to try different methods of explaining the subject matter. Tutoring can be really effective this way.

My work in grad school has helped me to develop skills in reading, writing, and argumentation. I can look at the logical flow of a piece of writing--my own or someone else's--and draw ideas out of it, reconstruct it, or whatever is needed. I am very detail-oriented, which is necessary for implementing grammar rules, but I know how to pull back and look at the overall organization of an essay.

I grew up in a musical family and have been involved in choirs, piano lessons, band, and small ensembles for over 30 years. When I got to college, I majored in music performance and then music history. In my most recent degree, my minor was ethnomusicology (anthropology + music). I have experience in piano, recorder, and singing. While my training is almost entirely classical, I value other genres of music and am learning more every day. I even picked up salsa dancing along the way!

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to schedule lessons or if you have any questions! I will get back to you within 48 hours.

History

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

I have been studying the Bible all of my life. My father was a minister of education and he put me through all the classes my church had available, including Bible Drill; I also took courses in the Old Testament and the New Testament in college. Subjects I consider when reading the Bible include historical context and literary genre, and I know how to use supplementary tools such as commentaries.
Music History,

Music History

I have spent 8 years as a teaching assistant in music history and music appreciation and had my own music appreciation classes for 2 1/2 years. I also took many seminars on music history, often on 20th-century music or music of the Renaissance. My area of interest is 19th-century Britain.

Piano

I spent 21 years studying the piano, specifically solo classical music. After a break, I picked it back up; I currently play piano for a Baptist church, where I accompany worship services and choir rehearsal. As such, I am improving my skills in improvisation. I can also teach basic music theory as it is connected with the piano.

Ear Training

Like all music majors in undergrad, ear training was part of my degree. I excel at melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic dictation. My experience playing the piano has given me a thorough grounding in this.
