I hold a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University. I have a lot of teaching experience, from lecturing in 300 student classes to one-on-one tutoring. I've taught children with reading problems in Holt Michigan, and taught English as a second language to children in Hong Kong, where I also worked as a private tutor. I have taught archaeology and anthropology classes at Columbia University in New York City and at Community College in Baltimore. In sum, I have taught a variety of subjects to different age groups and at different educational levels.
Strong test scores contributed to my acceptance to the PhD program at Columbia, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and insights with students who have ambitious goals for their future. Personally, I am a friendly family man with a young son.
I have experience tutoring High School and College-age students. Based largely on my SAT and ACT scores, I was a National Merit Semifinalist in High School, and received a scholarship to Albion College.
I am a published author, with two articles printed in scholarly journals in 2015. I have completed a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University, an Ivy League institution. I scored in the 99th percentile for the Verbal section of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and received the highest possible score on the Analytic writing section. I have extensive experience working with university students.

Super Knowledgeable, Organized
My son has a packed schedule, with a full load during the day and an extra class online--history. We used him after the first month of school when it was clear he was falling behind and that the material was very challenging. John answered our request for help with prompt understanding of what was needed to catch up, all the while making it meaningful and relative to today's current events. John has gone beyond our expectations by bringing books of his own as resources if the curriculum is lacking adequate explanation. He packs a lot into a lesson, still keeping the content manageable. He is such a wealth of knowledge that as a parent, I'm drawn to his lessons and explanations and finding myself saying, "I never knew that." Organized and punctual are easy descriptors for him. We couldn't have asked for a better history tutor.Lisa, 60 lessons with John
John overall is a great teacher. Very calm and collected. The way he teaches and constructs you to look at the test (SAT) is great. Highly recommend. Really enjoyed my time with John and look forward to more.Xander, 1 lesson with John
John helped me a great deal. I am taking a class on Landforms and Landscapes and I was struggling with coastal geographies. He spent the time the help me understand the material and guide me to the correct answer. The thing I appreciated the most was that he made a point to not give me answers and pushed me to find it on my own with his guide. I successfully submitted the assignment and feel I have a far better understanding of coastal geography more. I will definitely be asking John for more help in the future.Chris, 1 lesson with John
John is fast responding my questions. He is knowledgable to work with. After his editing, the writing looks much better grammatically. I'll definitely ask for his help again next time.Shirley, 1 lesson with John
Very knowledgeable and kind
John did an amazing job. For someone that was struggling greatly before the session I was able to come out of it feeling much more confident in the work that I am doing. He was able to answer all the questions that I had with no problem. GREAT JOB!Joseph, 6 lessons with John

Helpful and accommodating!
Really happy I chose John to help me with my Personal Statement for grad admissions. He was really able to point out the mistakes I have made within my essay and as well help me with the important parts I was missing. He made sure to answer all of my questions and concerns. I submitted my statement without fear of knowing it was not good or felt as if it was missing something. Thank you!!Ivana, 2 lessons with John
An incredible writer and a tutor who really knows how to educate
John walked me through the brainstorming, writing, editing, and finalizing of my anthropology writing sample. He is very knowledgeable, organized, and good at teaching. He knows how to explain an anthropological perspective in a clear yet deep way. He always challenges me to think on a more sophisticated level. More importantly, with his help, I am able to step back, reflect upon my writing, and even become my own editor. Highly recommend to anyone who not only hopes to improve writing skills, but also hopes to enhance the ability of thinking reflexively, critically, and holistically.Zihan, 17 lessons with John
