About James

I am an experienced private tutor specializing in teaching several different subjects. I am passionate about teaching, and actively engaged in the complete learning process. I love working with students to help them develop an understanding of knowledge and how it relates in our world! I offer comprehensive tutoring for elementary and middle school reading, writing, math, science, as well as STAAR preparation & remediation. I also offer beginning to intermediate level flute lessons, and beginning to advanced level saxophone lessons. These subjects provide an important foundation for many related fields of study, and I sincerely enjoy helping students secure knowledge and comfort in these areas.

I find passion in teaching students, targeting their needs, and achieving their version of success. Every student is entirely unique and each teaching experience holds its own outcomes. My tutoring begins with getting to know the aspirations and goals of each student as related to online lessons. As they outline their artistic/academic goals, I write out an individual lesson plan that will help them to effectively and efficiently accomplish those goals. When we begin lessons, we will work with student's currents abilities and materials (notes, homework, or course materials), and I will also begin to the table my own tools and information to provide a well-rounded learning experience. I am always open to helping with a quick math, science, or music related problem, or additional questions that may come up in-between lessons.

My method is geared towards understanding of the material, rather than just rote completion of homework. This is, as the story goes, like "teaching the man to fish". While it may sound cleché, this goes a long way in helping students to achieve true success in their studies.

I believe that any student may excel at any subject given the right tools and guidance. I also believe tutoring can be an essential part of this educational process. My method of tutoring directly reflects these beliefs. The ultimate tutoring situation is one in which I can not only provide information to the students, but also resources in which they may find their own information to further their own educational growth and development.

I am excited to hear from you and look forward to helping you achieve success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

12 + years of coaching experience at both the college intramural and secondary school levels compiling an overall winning record with both programs. These experiences include two undefeated seasons at the secondary school level which resulted in district championships (2012-2014). Several divisional championships at the college intramural level (2004-2007).

Biology

Over the past 4 years I have taught biology in public school settings. I have also spent a large amount of that time teaching kids the importance of gathering unbiased research information, making valid and testable hypothesis, conducting scientific experiments, collecting and analyzing data from those experiments, as well as transcribing and translating that data into charts and graphs in order to effectively share our evidence and conclusions. During that time, my students' TAKS and STAAR score improved by an average of 18% throughout that 4 year period. And over the past two years, many of my students earned "commended" on their STAAR exam. Now, as a population of my former students enter into college, many of them are choosing fields of study directly related to science and in particular, biology.

Ecology

Over the past 8 years I have worked as a life science/biology teacher in the state of Texas. From that classroom teaching experience I have learned and developed many attributes and techniques that allow me to be an exceptional ecology tutor, especially at the elementary and middle school level. I present ecology in a way that is immediately accessible to students, so that they can effectively relate scientific information to their lives and experience with nature.

Elementary Math

I have worked as a math tutor for elementary and middle schools for over 5 years in the North Texas area. During that time, many of my students significantly improved their math understanding and scores on weekly class assessments, as well as on the STAAR (formerly known as TAKS) test. I am confident that I posses the strong work ethic, organization, communication, planning and tutoring skills that you seek for your student.

Elementary Science

Over the past 8 years I have worked as a science teacher and coach in Texas. During that time, many of my students significantly improved their daily science assessment scores in class, as well as on the 8th grade STAAR test (formerly known as TAKS). And although I have the ability and experience to teach all core subjects (math, social studies, and language arts), I am especially adept at teaching science to elementary and middle school students.

Music Theory

During my time in college, I spent many hours studying music and music theory. Now, as a full-time teacher and musician I often utilize those skill to compose original music, communicate effectively with other professional musicians, as well as to improvise music in blues, jazz, rock, and gospel settings. I also share and teach the basics of some of those skills to fellow musicians and students to help them to better understand any musical compositions that we may be working on. I use the language of music theory everyday to communicate and convey musical ideas to fellow musicians and students of music, and I look forward to sharing these same skills and knowledge with you!

Saxophone

Over the past 20 years I have worked as a professional musician and private lesson music teacher. During this time I was able to effectively assist student's musical progress and development in critical concepts related to sight reading and expressive musical interpretation in the styles of classical, jazz, blues, gospel, rock, and latin music.

STAAR

Over the past 8 years I have worked as teacher (math and science) and coach in Texas. During that time, the vast majority of my students were able to significantly improve their TAKS/STAAR test scores in all core subjects. As reading, writing, math, and science were a primary focus of our TEKS based tutoring preparation, many of my students routinely earned "commended" on those sections of the STAAR test.
