About Daniel

My name is Daniel, and my goal is to become a school teacher. I am currently in the process of pursuing alternative teaching certification, and I am also working as a substitute. Tutoring to me is a necessary step of experience towards becoming the teacher of an entire class, and I hope to learn as much from my students as they learn from me. Having graduated from the University of North Texas with a 3.956 GPA from the Philosophy Department, I have a fair amount of experience writing papers. For this reason, the services I offer center around reading and writing. The end of my tutoring will be to help students better understand grammar, writing, and reading comprehension. For the record, my degree is in Religious Studies, so I can also tutor on various world religions, especially Christianity and the Bible. Most of my classes were on Eastern Religions, so I am also capable of explaining the basics of Buddhism and Hinduism.

Tutoring is new to me, so I have yet to crystallize tutoring methods. My plan is to get to know the student and whatever material the student needs help with, first. I will be sure to study up on whatever it is the student needs guidance on, in order to make sure each session is productive. Every student is different, so once I identify what the issue is, big or small, I will cater the tutoring to help the student strengthen weaknesses. This will be accomplished through thorough explanation with examples, and various writing and reading exercises. Through clear communication and repetition, students will move forward in their mastery of reading and writing. As for Bible and World Religions, a similar process will be employed, but with less exercises, due to the fact that the subject is more data-oriented.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Apart from making it a habit to read the Bible every day, I have been taking lay courses on the Bible for the past 5 years. I have also read several books related to biblical interpretation, and I have several whole chapters of the the Bible memorized, New Testament and Hebrew Bible. Some examples of memorized Scripture include Philippians, Ephesians, the Sermon on the Mount, Isaiah 40 and Isaiah 53. I have also taken Christianity and Philosophy at UNT under the teaching of Dr. Fredricks, as well having taken the class Early Christian Thought with Dr. James. Hebrew Bible was another course I took at UNT, having been taught by Dr. Yaffe. Currently I am studying the Bible under the teaching of Tommy Nelson, senior pastor of Denton Bible Church.

Religion

I graduated from UNT with a 3.956 GPA in Religious Studies. The degree program requires taking at least one course in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Eastern Religion, Religion and History, and Religion and the Environment. It would not surprise me if the requirements have changed since I graduated, but I am well-rounded from what I have studied. 3 of the courses I took centered around the religious thought of the East, focused mostly on Hinduism and Buddhism, while another 3 courses I took focused on the Abrahamic Traditions. I also had the opportunity to take a class that surveyed the Great Religions of the world, as well as a survey of the Philosophy or Science of Religion in the West that began in the 19th century with the theories Muller and Tylor and continues today in the writings of Geertz.
