About Joseph

Hello, I'm Joseph, and I would be honored to help you. There is nothing more important for a young person than to receive a solid educational foundation, and I hope to help you lay that foundation.
I spent 13 years as a classroom teacher, 12 of them in a unique ESL school for teenage beginning English learners in Ft. Worth. I have trained in and used some of the most current, innovative and effective strategies for language acquisition, and for content acquisition in a new language. These strategies work in any educational environment, particularly an individual tutoring environment.
Generally small class sizes allowed me to work individually with my students to a large degree, and develop my ability to connect with each individual student and determine how to best motivate and instruct him or her. I also sponsored a number of club activities, and devoted a substantial amount of my time to tutoring programs. I have learned that strategies and tools are helpful, but that each student is unique and special and requires an approach tailored to his or her personality, level, and specific needs.
I hope that I can help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I was a certified Texas secondary English teacher for over 15 years. I taught at an ESL school for beginning language learners (newly-arrived refugees and immigrants) for 13 years, including English and reading content courses and various tutoring programs. I minored in English at UNT. I scored very high on the English portion of the ACT, though I honestly do not remember the exact score.

American History

I held a general Secondary Social Studies certification from 2004-13, as well as a Secondary History certification (grades 6-12) for over 15 years, taught high school social studies for about 8 of my 14 years with the Ft. Worth ISD and one year of 6th grade social studies. I participated in numerous tutoring programs and completed many hours of Social Studies professional development. I have a BA in history from UNT with a 4.0 GPA in my major courses.

English

I held a Texas secondary English (grades 6-12) certification for over 15 years, and secondary English Language Arts and ESL certification (grades 8-12) from 2004-2013. I taught at an ESL school for beginning language learners (newly-arrived refugees and immigrants) for 13 years, including English and reading content courses and various tutoring programs. I minored in English at UNT.

ESL/ESOL

I held a Texas secondary English (grades 6-12) certification for over 15 years, and secondary English Language Arts and ESL certification (grades 8-12) from 2004-2013. I taught at an ESL school for beginning language learners (newly-arrived refugees and immigrants) for 13 years, including English and reading content courses and various tutoring programs. I minored in English at UNT and took courses in linguistics, and completed an ESL certification program as well as numerous professional development courses in ESL strategy.

Geography

I held a general Secondary Social Studies certification from 2004-2013, taught the high school World Geography course for about 8 of my 14 years with the Ft. Worth ISD and one year of 6th grade social studies. I participated in numerous tutoring programs and completed many hours of Social Studies professional development. I have a BA in history from UNT with a 4.0 GPA in my major courses.

Government & Politics

I held a general Secondary Social Studies certification from 2004-2013, taught high school social studies for about 8 of my 14 years with the Ft. Worth ISD and one year of 6th grade social studies. I participated in numerous tutoring programs and completed many hours of Social Studies professional development. Political science is a key part of the Texas secondary social studies curriculum, and knowledge of political science is required for the state certification process. I also took several graduate-level political science courses at UNT toward a Masters degree I did not complete.

Phonics

I held a Texas secondary English (grades 6-12) certification for over 15 years, and secondary English Language Arts and ESL certification (grades 8-12) from 2004-2013. I taught at an ESL school for beginning language learners (newly-arrived refugees and immigrants) for 13 years. I took linguistics courses as part of my English minor and certification studies.

Political Science

I have a BA in history from UNT, and also took several senior and graduate level political science courses. I taught high school social studies in Ft. Worth for many years, the curriculum of which included general political systems and specific knowledge of world political events. To pass the Secondary Social Studies certification exam, I had to demonstrate strong knowledge of World, US, and Texas politics, political systems, and political history. I have been a "political junkie" since I was in high school and Reagan was president.

Social Studies

I held a general Secondary Social Studies certification from 2004-2013, and taught high school social studies for about 8 of my 14 years with the Ft. Worth ISD, and one year of 6th grade social studies. I participated in numerous tutoring programs and completed many hours of Social Studies professional development. I have a BA in history from UNT, and completed several graduate level political science courses with a 4.0 GPA in my major course work.

STAAR

I taught in a Ft. Worth high school from 2000-2013. FWISD curriculum goals and strategies were tied to TAKS, then STAAR, for the entire time. It was incumbent on me as an educator to structure lessons to encompass these goals and assist my students in test mastery.

TAKS

I taught in a Ft. Worth high school from 2000-2013. FWISD curriculum goals and strategies were tied to TAKS, then STAAR, for the entire time. It was incumbent on me as an educator to structure lessons to encompass these goals and assist my students in test mastery.

Writing

While at UNT I minored in English, focusing on composition and linguistics. As a student, my greatest academic strength was essay writing. I was adept in all subjects and all styles. I have also had some poems, many editorial letters, and a short story published.
I held Texas teaching certificates in English, English Language Arts, and English as a Second Language for many years, and taught content courses, including reading and English, at a Ft. Worth ISD ESL school for 13.
