I am currently a doctoral candidate in a psychology program in the DFW area. My academic life has been dedicated to the study of psychology (and all that comes with it). Throughout the course of my current program, I have taught a number of undergraduate courses (e.g., statistics, theories of personality). Additionally, through the completion of my own research and working as a research assistant I have become proficient in APA style, research methods, and SPSS. Though psychology is my primary focus, my academic background has also provided me with experience and knowledge in academic writing, grammar, basic math skills and history.
My teaching/tutoring style attempts to integrate the student's strengths and interests with the material being taught. Furthermore, I am extremely process focused and value creating a supportive yet challenging learning environment that will ideally foster internal motivation. I do not view mistakes or incorrect answers as failure, but rather an opportunity to learn and grow -- ultimately, I hope that my students are able to adopt this mindset as well. Lastly, I believe that the key to a successful education is the ability to express ideas; verbally as well as in prose. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With my educational background in counseling (have already received a master's and completing a PhD), I have worked in several settings which specialized in serving special needs populations including Aspergers. More specifically, my master's level internship took place in a community mental health center (Academy of Physical and Social Development) which focused on children and adolescents with various developmental delays including Aspergers. My work with this population has primarily focused on the remediation of symptoms and increasing social functioning. Furthermore, I also worked as an instructional aide at Watertown High School in Watertown, MA, where I was a part of the CAPS program (Counseling and Academic Performance Services). In this role I worked with several students whom had been diagnosed with A.S. which took a more academic focus. Specifically, my work with students was primarily focused on the development of studying skills, and tutoring subjects such as history, geometry and English. Through these experiences, I believe I have developed the skills and knowledge to effectively work with this population in multiple domains including educational settings.
I played collegiate baseball at the Division III level. Following my playing career, I have coached at the competitive youth and high school levels, in both team and individual environments. In addition to knowledge of physical skills related to the sport, I am also completing a Ph.D. in sport psychology and can integrate mental aspects of the game into training.
Throughout my academic career I have demonstrated strong study skills, allowing me to reach my highest academic potential as I am currently completing a PhD program. I focus on organization, the establishment of long and short-term goals as well as practical solutions to help facilitate motivation. Furthermore, I have worked with individuals at the collegiate level who were completing my courses to establish and maintain study skills to enhance their academic performance.
