About Travis

Salvete!

I recently completed a Master of Classics (December 2015) degree at the University of Dallas. I received a B.A. in history from the University of North Texas in 2009. My official Classics language hours in college include 18 graduate hours in Latin, 9 in Ancient Greek; 17 undergraduate hours in Latin, and 6 in Ancient Greek. Thus I have read many representative authors in Latin: Vergil, Cicero, Suetonius, Livy, Tacitus, Martial, Erasmus, Plautus, Petronius, Lucretius, Caesar, et al.; and Greek: Herodotus, Homer, Hesiod, Thucydides, Plato, et al.

I have both tutoring and teaching experience. Currently I teach second-semester Latin at the University of Dallas, and tutor a high school student on the side. In the past I taught two semesters of elementary Latin and one of Koine Greek for the University of North Texas Classics Collegium. I also spent three weeks in Italy with the University of Dallas Latin in Rome program for high school students as a tutor.

Learning materials/texts: I use whatever materials are required of the student. I myself have used a variety, from traditional grammar-heavy resources to inductive readers, and thus am able to adapt well to the student's needs. This also means I have my own recommendations, if no specific text is required.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have a Master's in Classics (University of Dallas '15), and a Bachelor's in History (University of North Texas '09), with a focus on ancient/European history. Some classes I have taken: The Ancient World, Greek Civilization, Roman Civilization, Early Christianity, Ancient Near East, and Ancient Israel.

I have taught Latin and Ancient Greek at the college level, and tutored Latin at the high school level.

Latin

I earned my Master's in Classics ('15) at the University of Dallas, with a focus on Latin (18 graduate hours). I have also completed 17 undergraduate hours in Latin, and read extensively in major authors such as Vergil, Caesar, Cicero, Horace, and Plautus. I tutor in Latin at the high school level, and teach it at the college level. Currently I teach second-semester Latin at the University of Dallas.
