About Justin

I've worked in a tutoring or teaching role for most of my adult life, and I love helping other people learn!

While earning my B.S. in math, I worked in my university's math clinic, tutoring a variety of (math) subjects, and while I was in graduate school I was a teaching assistant in the math department for two years, and for one year I worked in a high school geometry classroom, both enriching the students' education and my ability to communicate and teach. I've been a private tutor in the years since.

I can also tutor technology and programming topics; I love programming about as much as I love math, and I've been improving and making use of that skill since I was in high school. I know a number of languages and frameworks, such as Java, Android, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and more!

I can offer both in-person and online lessons. I typically do in-person lessons within the Denton city limits, but I would be willing to meet elsewhere in exchange for an increase in my rate or an imposed minimum on lesson length.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

I have undergone coursework in C++, and I'm quite comfortable teaching or tutoring the language. I've been programming in general for several years on my own and have used similar languages extensively. I've also tutored similar languages as well.

Calculus

I've done calculus tutoring for several years, and I received A's when I originally took those courses.

Computer Programming

I've been a hobbyist programmer since I was in high school. I've learned a number of languages, and I always love learning new ones and new technologies, but most of my recent experience has to do with Java/Android, and even more recently JavaScript/node.js. I have two years of experience tutoring in my university's math clinic, helping students with any concepts and exercises that they were having trouble with.

CSS

I've known CSS since I was in high school building small web pages for myself. I've kept up with advances in the language and refresh my knowledge in it frequently.

Differential Equations

I have taken, and done well in, differential equations courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Also, differential equations is one of the courses that I tutored while working in the math clinic at UTA.

Discrete Math

As an undergraduate at UTA, I have taken discrete mathematics and advanced discrete mathematics. I did well in both courses, and I thoroughly enjoyed the material.

Geometry

Geometry was a big part of my graduate studies. Additionally, I've previously worked in a high school geometry classroom for an entire school year.

Java

I am very familiar with the Java programming language and environment, having created an Android application in addition to studying the language thoroughly.

JavaScript

I am a self-taught JavaScript programmer. I have used the language to successfully completed various exercises make submissions to programming contests. I also use it for some personal projects.

Linear Algebra

I've taken linear algebra at the graduate and undergraduate level, receiving an A and a B, respectively. My PhD work has focused on algebra, which has required that I be exceedingly familiar with vector spaces and linear transformations, which are heavily used in linear algebra classes.

Linux

I've used Linux on my personal computers for over 8 years. In the last two years I've used the Arch Linux distribution, which has required that I learn a lot about how the OS works.

Physics

My minor for my bachelor's degree was physics. I received good grades in those courses, which included computational physics, astrobiology, and introductory modern physics.

Python

I've know Python since I was in high school, and I've used it off and on over the years. In particular, I've used it to complete all of my assignments and projects in my computational physics course, all of which I received good grades for. I've also used Python to write small GUI applications.

Web Design

I've known and used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript since I was in high school. I've built small pages/sites as personal projects, and I've kept up to date on modern additions to all three languages.

Excellent tutor

Justin has been patient and thorough as a Calculus 2 tutor. Breaking each step down into simple, easy-to-understand concepts, Justin guides you through complex material leaving you with not only with the knowledge of how to solve a problem, but also why it works. As someone who has been through a few tutors, I highly recommend Justin.
