About Justin

My goal is always to help my students understand the concepts they are struggling with, so that they can do their best, both when doing their coursework and when they apply it later on. I will guide you through your homework problems, check your work, share with you any tips and tricks I have that might help you, and, of course, help you better understand any topics you're having trouble with.

I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics and about 3 years of graduate studies in math as well. I have two years of experience tutoring in my university's math clinic, helping students with any concepts and exercises that they were having trouble with. I have also spent two years as a teaching assistant for calculus classes, and then I spent a year helping out in a high school geometry classroom as a special sort of TA.

I have one and a half years of experience programming in Java, mostly for Android, working on personal projects. I am also able to tutor JavaScript (mostly node.js, but I can work in the browser as well) and other information technologies.

I am available to tutor during the late morning, afternoon, and early evening and can provide lessons online and in-person at a library or coffee shop in Denton. If you wish to meet elsewhere, an increase to your rate may be required.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I've done calculus tutoring for several years, and I received A's when I originally took those courses.

Computer Programming

I've been a hobbyist programmer since I was in high school. I've learned a number of languages, and I always love learning new ones and new technologies, but most of my recent experience has to do with Java/Android, and even more recently JavaScript/node.js. I have two years of experience tutoring in my university's math clinic, helping students with any concepts and exercises that they were having trouble with.

Differential Equations

I have taken, and done well in, differential equations courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Also, differential equations is one of the courses that I tutored while working in the math clinic at UTA.

Discrete Math

As an undergraduate at UTA, I have taken discrete mathematics and advanced discrete mathematics. I did well in both courses, and I thoroughly enjoyed the material.

Java

I am very familiar with the Java programming language and environment, having created an Android application in addition to studying the language thoroughly.

JavaScript

I am a self-taught JavaScript programmer. I have used the language to successfully completed various exercises make submissions to programming contests. I also use it for some personal projects. I spent a year helping out in a high school geometry classroom as a special sort of TA.

Linear Algebra

I've taken linear algebra at the graduate and undergraduate level, receiving an A and a B, respectively. My PhD work has focused on algebra, which has required that I be exceedingly familiar with vector spaces and linear transformations, which are heavily used in linear algebra classes.

Linux

I've used Linux on my personal computers for over 8 years. In the last two years I've used the Arch Linux distribution, which has required that I learn a lot about how the OS works.

Excellent tutor — Justin has been patient and thorough as a Calculus 2 tutor. Breaking each step down into simple, easy-to-understand concepts, Justin guides you through complex material leaving you with not only with the knowledge of how to solve a problem, but also why it works. As someone who has been through a few tutors, I highly recommend Justin. ...
