About Tim

Hello, my name is Tim and I love to teach and help people learn many things. I have roughly 10 years of experience teaching in a variety of subjects and am quite calm and patient, two things I believe are necessary when helping people understand a subject, especially if they are already apprehensive about the topic. I have an Bachelor's degree in both Psychology and Sociology and a Master's degree in Psychology. During my graduate studies, I was employed as a teaching assistant where I helped teach statistics and research to my fellow students. At the same time, I was also tutoring/teaching an autistic youth in a variety of subjects as both part of his homeschool curriculum and as a supplement to it.

The most rewarding aspect of being a teacher or a tutor is seeing when the student finally grasps the subject at hand. While this may not mean he or she has completely mastered the subject, it is almost as if you can see the person's self-esteem tangibly rise. That is a great feeling of accomplishment for both the student and teacher.

I have taken a wide range of courses involving statistics throughout my graduate studies. A whole year in the curriculum was dedicated to statistics and research which involved the creation of a unique study as well as presenting the results at a conference. I went outside of my program to learn more by taking business statistics and a doctoral survey design course. I also spent a year as a teaching assistant for Statistics and Research in my graduate program.

I have studied psychology since 2005 and although I lean more toward the research side of the field, I have knowledge in a wide variety of subjects from race, gender and sexuality studies to bio-psychology to survey design. I double majored in Psychology and Sociology as an undergraduate and expanded studies to include criminology, political sociology and deviance and then maintained a 4.0 GPA for my graduate degree in psychology.

As a result of my specific social science degrees, a great deal of time spent in school involved writing a vast amount of research papers. I also was a teaching assistant for a statistics and research course where I not only taught math aspects but I also taught how to properly write research papers following APA format. While I do not have a formal English or writing degree, the time I spent in school contributed to honing my skills as a writer.

Throughout my college and university studies, I have also helped care for an autistic youth (accounting for roughly nine years). My internship/practicum involved teaching the same youth with autism valuable life skills including career planning, job interviewing, standard school curriculum and life skills such as cooking, carpentry and basic automotive lessons (e.g., tire, oil, and brake changes).

Feel free to contact me with any questions even if it is about a subject not necessarily listed on my profile. I will respond as honestly and promptly as I can regarding the subject matter.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I am qualified to work with students with autism for a variety of reasons. Most relevant to this qualification would be the fact that I have helped raise and teach an autistic child for roughly 18 years. More recently, I taught the youth a variety of subjects as part of his high school home-school curriculum and part of my graduate internship. In addition to practical experience, I have both an undergraduate and a graduate degree in psychology and part of my studies included behavioral classes and workshops.
