About Laura

In the public system I taught Soph & Sr English and Theatre Arts. In the prison system I taught Life Skills and Pre-GED to those who neglected their education the first time around. And in the circus I taught across every subject for every age group of the Performers' children.

The requirement for my Honors Thesis for graduation was 45 pages, but I delivered nearly 60. One semester was devoted to researching my topic; the second semester was dedicated to the writing of the thesis. I was also editor and contributor for an annual university publication of short stories.

My father was a History major whose gift of mastering five languages led him into international commerce. From him I gained a wealth of historical knowledge and a respect for world cultures. He also insisted that I be a stickler for perfecting my knowledge and use of my own language. I will always be that stickler.

Reading is a journey outward, writing is a journey inward.

Both my parents turned nearly every learning experience into a puzzle or game for me. I continued the practice for myself all through school and college. Now I use this technique in my teaching process. I try to turn every challenge into a puzzle to be solved or a game to be enjoyed while using established puzzles and games to re-enforce the lessons.

When the challenge is no longer intimidating, the learning is easier and more permanent.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am an active, daily-walking Christian. I read and study my Bible regularly and take copious notes during Sunday's sermons/classes. I have explored many religions and philosophies, and have returned to Christianity (although in a non-denominational setting). I consider myself quite knowledgeable of Scripture, relevant history, and cultural influences of the time and region.

Cosmetology

From 1980 to 1996 I was a licensed cosmetologist, and worked in salons in Houston and El Paso before joining the Theatre department at UTEP as student/techie. I worked with hair styles, wigs, and makeup for nearly all university productions those years. I am no longer licensed, but I have forgotten nothing.

Public Speaking

In addition to my years standing before a classroom, I have 25+ years in Theatre - first in the university, then in the community - acting and directing. Speech is one of my certified fields in Oklahoma, but, unfortunately, that license has lapsed.

SAT Writing

The requirement for my Honors Thesis for graduation was 45 pages, but I delivered nearly 60. One semester was devoted to researching my topic; the second semester was dedicated to the writing of the thesis. I have taught Sophomore and Senior English at the high school level, and was editor and contributor for an annual university publication of short stories.

Study Skills

The key to being a "good" student is having strong, well-functioning methods for studying that which is being learned. As a student, I developed my own style of note-taking, adopted and adapted others' styles to my own, and practiced various forms of memorization and recall techniques. I have acquired enough knowledge and expertise to qualify for several subject areas because I have great study skills that can be adopted or adapted by my students with a little guidance from me.

Additionally, I coached many of my students in my classrooms, and helped them improve their habits to achieve their goals.

Theater

In addition to my years standing before a classroom, I have 25+ years in Theatre - first in the university, then in the community - acting and directing. Theatre Arts is one of my certified fields in Oklahoma, but, unfortunately, that license has lapsed.

Writing

I wrote an Honors thesis as part of my cum laude requirements. It was well-received for its informational quality as well as its entertainment value.
