I currently hold the position of Assistant Teaching Professor at a US/Chinese engineering school in Shanghai. I live in Dallas, Texas, and I am remotely teaching a Discrete Math course for them. Previously, I held the position of Affiliate Post-Doctoral Instructor of Mathematics at the University of Dallas for three years, in which I taught all levels of college mathematics courses to math majors, science majors, literature majors, philosophy majors, art majors, and more. Before this position, I was a graduate teaching assistant and research assistant for 6 years at the University of Minnesota, where I earned my doctoral degree and taught courses in calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. Over the past 9 years, I have had the opportunity to work under, and learn from, several instructors who experimented with different teaching techniques and classroom styles ranging from traditional lecture to flipped classroom, from modified Moore-method to more standard inquiry-based learning techniques. I have taught with games and apps; I have incorporated lots of student-led or student-centered activities into the college courses I teach; and I have made prolific use of office hours to provide valuable one-on-one discussion and advice for students of all skill levels. Key words for me are: communication, connection, creativity, precision, and resourcefulness. I try to listen and ask questions always.

Drawing

I am a lifelong amateur artist who has practiced my craft for many years - I’m still learning more, even now. I have received formal training from: the Fundamentals of Art correspondence course through the erstwhile Art Instruction Schools (in Minneapolis), a painting course from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and a drawing/painting/sculpting class through Sue Stauber’s DreamWeaver’s Studio. I am now self-taught and rely upon communities of artists on YouTube to help me develop my skills in digital drawing and nurture my beginning skills in tradigital animation.

Public Speaking

I have 9 years of public speaking experience as a lecturer or teaching assistant in academia. For 3 years in high school, I competed award-winningly in several public speaking styles in the school’s speech and debate club. Between the ages of 12 and 18, I regularly volunteered as a docent at my local history museum and Chinese garden (this involved attending monthly topic lectures and synthesizing this content into a script to perform while guiding guests from a wide variety of demographics on tours around the museum and garden). I also regularly attended, and contributed to, two Toastmaster’s groups (one when I was 13, and the other when I was 10).

Homeschool,

Homeschool

I am a successful graduate of two years of public education (K-1), eight years of pure homeschool (2-10), and two years (11-12) of homeschool mixed with community college courses. I went on to graduate magna cum laude in mathematics from a four-year liberal arts college, and earned my PhD in mathematics following that. I am a self-motivated, auto-didactic learner and an adaptive, cross-disciplinary thinker who excels in mathematics, language, writing, and art. I can process complex data and think logically through issues of importance. I feel that I can competently assist any homeschooling students on Wyzant.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I was an early reader, and have voraciously read ever since then. I earned an 800 on the Reading SAT, and am now a PhD who can read and interpret complex, sophisticated texts in a number of fields.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

I earned a 770 out of 800 in the year 2007, when the SAT Writing test still required one to construct a fluent, cogent, and grammatically correct essay from scratch. At the same time, I earned an 800 on the reading portion of that year’s SAT. Together, these would translate to 785 on the current Evidence-Based Reading and Writing portion of the SAT test. This year, the SAT Writing test does not require you to produce an essay from scratch, and instead requires you to take several passages and edit them for grammar, punctuation, fluency, and cogency. I believe that the test-taking skill I demonstrated in my high school years (see above); the numerous essays I wrote during those years and in my college years; my long-term practice in creative writing; as well as my years in academia writing lecture notes, seminar talks, a master’s thesis, a doctoral dissertation, and published work in mathematics have prepared me well to assist you in preparing for the SAT Writing exam.
