About Lena

I am an absolute lover of learning and teaching others. I graduated from the University of Michigan this past May, where I received a BA in Art History and a BFA in Dance.

Through the years, I have gained a lot of experience teaching and tutoring. I worked as an elementary school tutor through a program called Peace Neighborhood, and I have taught dance at various studios for many years. These experiences have developed me into an extremely patient, genuine, creative, and encouraging yet demanding tutor. I treat every session as a chance to deepen my students' love of learning, sparking their own curiosity, creativity, and hunger for knowledge.

I plan my lessons in a way that always allows time for self expression, reflection, and analysis, pushing my students beyond just achieving certain grades, and helping them to absorb and apply the knowledge they gain each session. I will help my students review material in a way that makes sense to them, presenting new individualized perspectives of the material they have learned in class. I also provide my students with a handful of study and memorization exercises and skills I have developed over the years. My tutoring specialities include English, writing, US history, social studies, and Art History, but I tutor each subject slightly differently.

My courses at the University of Michigan as well as the various AP courses I took in High School have prepared me to tutor the subjects above. For English tutoring I tend to concentrate on developing reading comprehension skills through reading/analysis exercises. I push my students to develop their understanding of passages on their own, and then we work together to develop detail-oriented reading skills and articulate analysis of passages. Next, writing is an extremely important skill to have in academia as well as in life.

No matter the subject (be it science or english), one will have to write either an essay or report to pass any course. In writing tutoring sessions, I work with my students through writing exercises, drills, as well as editing their papers. I take time to explain my edits thoroughly and then work with my students to find alternative sentence or paragraph structures, wording, evidence, etc. that would help better articulate their ideas. For History or Social Studies tutoring, I work with my students on study and memorization exercises that help them to absorb events, dates, names, etc. much more quickly and efficiently. I also help them to map out events so that they understand the chronological advancement of history and the context in which events occur.

My background in Art History helps me to explain the cultural aspects to history and social studies classes in an interesting way that makes sense to my students, possibly turning this "boring" subject into something fascinating! Lastly, in teaching Art History I focus on developing analytical and observational skills, as well as helping my students gain the vocabulary needed to articulate their ideas and thoughts clearly within this subject. This may mean looking at pieces they have to learn for their class, or using examples from contemporary life that they may relate to more strongly.

For me, tutoring is all about developing individualized learning habits and lifestyles that will help students exceed in both in school and in life. Each student is cared for in a unique way that best benefits their needs and desires as a learner. Together my experience tutoring and teaching over the years, my knowledge of a wide range of subjects from coursework at the University of Michigan, my love of teaching and learning, and my patient demeanor push me to be the best tutor I can possibly be.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BFA in Dance, where I had to take ballet classes four times a week. I have also taught ballet at various studios to young kids as well as adults. I am currently teaching ballet at two studios in Dallas.
