About Margie

I am a psychologist with a PhD from New York University. As an undergraduate at Hofstra University, I was named "Outstanding Senior Scholar" and graduated Summa Cum Laude with Highest Honors in Psychology. I received the rare distinction of being elected into Phi Beta Kappa during my junior year. Given my academic experiences, I have lots to share with my students in terms of developing strong study skills and approaches.

My background as an educator has a broad bandwidth. I began teaching numerous courses in child psychology as an undergraduate "Peer Professor" at Hofstra, Later I was honored with a Teaching Fellowship Award at NYU where I taught Introductory Psychology and graduate-level Social Science Research Methodology. I brought my love of teaching into the business world where I worked on Training and Development projects for big corporations. For several years I volunteered as an elementary school Environmental Education guide in Northern California. I designed and taught psychology workshops at Collin College in Dallas. Parents hire me to coach their high school seniors in writing college application essays that truly set them apart from the pack. Throughout my teaching experiences, I have seen how thoroughly engaged my students are, and I've received wonderful feedback from them. These are among the greatest rewards of teaching--knowing that my students love learning with me.

As a tutor, I start by building a relationship with each student--knowing what makes them tick, and the the learning approaches with which they feel most comfortable. This gives me a huge advantage in being able to teach in ways that best serve them; in turn, they naturally feel more relaxed, and open to learning. There's nothing stiff about how I teach. I infuse each lesson with creativity--adding stories, examples, metaphors and learning tricks. All of these techniques help ensure that the student "gets" it, that the learning sticks. What might have been dreaded, believe it or not, becomes fun!

I am offering my tutoring expertise in academic areas where my passions lie--Psychology, Sociology and Writing/Vocabulary. I convey my love for my subject matter while teaching, passing that enthusiasm along to my students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sociology

I earned a bachelor's degree, Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude in Psychology, as well as an MA and PhD in Organizational Psychology from NYU. As a doctoral Teaching Fellow, I taught a masters level course in Research Methodology for the Social Sciences. My career includes years as an Organizational Development consultant to multiple corporations. On balance, I have been exposed to a substantial amount of sociological theory and research.
