As a tutor and as a teacher I strive to reveal and encourage the natural curiosity that we all have inside of us, as it takes bravery and humility to admit what we don't know. I majored in the History of Western Mathematics and Science, as well as Philosophy, so I love helping students think about what they're actually doing when they perform operations or graph equations. I ask a lot of questions because I've found that once students cultivate the ability to think critically and ask constructive questions themselves, they develop deeper understanding more quickly, and realize how exciting new challenges really are.

I began my journey as a Music Teaching Assistant in college, where I helped guide discussions on the origins of our music theory and helped students begin to wonder and make sense of how music can move us so. At the same time, I tutored the under-served student population in Santa Fe as part of both Breakthrough Collaborative and the Simon Charitable Foundation. In some cases, my students told me, they had never seen someone so excited to learn or had someone instill the same feeling in them. I knew I had found my calling.

After graduating, I moved back to Dallas to teach Preschool programs at the zoo, and then soon took a fulltime job teaching Honors Geometry to 9th graders at a rigorous high school focusing on the liberal arts. I was drawn to teach at a classical academy because I knew I'd be encouraged to do more than simply put formulas and worksheets in front of my students. My students proved every single theorem that they used, with guidance from the original master of geometry himself: Eucild. With his help, we not only explored the content of geometrical proofs, but took time to wonder about their structure, and what it really means to attain certainty.

From 2018-2019 I taught 4th grade as part of DISD, and also earned my teaching certificate. I'm currently employed with Studypoint for SAT/ACT prep, and I'd love to fill my time helping your student achieve their goals and discover their ow

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I make use of algebra every day in geometry to truly test my students' understanding of theorems, and it's been my favorite subject to tutor since I got involved in education 4 years ago.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

In the last five years I've tutored many algebra 2 students from the remedial to the advanced levels, as well as college students needing to meet a requirement. In college I learned to derive the formulas directly from their geometrical roots; this exposure even allowed me to have a hand in developing some curriculum at my previous school.

Geometry,

Geometry

While earning my degree in the History of Western Mathematics and Sciences, I was exposed directly to the beauty of Euclid's Elements - the first comprehensive Geometry text. I was so enamored by the beauty of Euclid's logic that I began to tutor while still in college in order to bring the joy of learning to underprivileged students, and finally even accepted an Honors Geometry teaching position at Chandler Preparatory Academy. I spend each of my days immersed in the world of geometry, doing my best to ensure that my students are not only successful in class and rigorous in their thoughts, but thoughtful and curious about the subject as a whole.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I'm in my sixth year of tutoring and third year of teaching; because of precal's foundations in geometry and algebra and extensive use in calculus, you could say it's what I've tutored in the most.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

After performing well on the SAT myself, some of the first students I tutored were underserved high school seniors looking to be the first in their families to go to college. A big part of this was the SAT. I'm proud to say they got accepted, and I've continued to help with test prep; whether your student is looking to pass or attain mastery, I can help them reach their goals.

Especially during my last two years tutoring in college it felt like I was always helping one high school student or another with test prep. With a few strategies and an understanding of how the questions are written, I was able to score in the 99th percentile of ACT Math and help them maximize their own score.

As part of Breakthrough Collaborative and Simon Scholars, I've tutored high school students in both trigonometry and calculus (which relies heavily on trig). Very Knowledgeable And Knows Where to Start Immediately!

To see our son actually understand geometry on his first visit with Stephen was very gratifying. He was nervous about sharing what he didn't know about geometry and having to talk with a "stranger" about his weaknesses. But Stephen came in, starting talking like he knew our son and starting working on geometry to where our son understood. Our son asked questions and wasn't afraid to try an answer and get it wrong. Stephen made him feel very comfortable. After Stephen left, our son felt so good about himself, we heard him say, "YESSSSSS!!!! I got it", as he went to his room. Thank you, Stephen. Look forward to the next session.

Great teacher!

Stephen H. is great! Took the time to see how best to explain things to my son Marcus and did so thoroughly and effectively. Marcus got out of his first session with Stephen saying that for the first time geometry was making sense to him! We will definitely be booking again. I highly recommend Stephen.

He teaches algebra and it makes sense!

My daughter said he helped her make sense of what she was learning and taught her in ways that she had never learned before. She is very excited to go back to class because now it all makes sense. Stephen was patient, courteous, and prompt! Two thumbs up! Thank you!

Fabulous

Stephen has been fabulous with my son and making lots of progress on getting him caught up with his schoolwork! Very patient as well. I will be contuing to use him as a math tutor!

Great tutor!

Stephen was able to explain the basics of Algebra to me during this lesson. I was having trouble recalling what a tangent was. My tutor was very professional and patient. I will definitely have him as a tutor in the future.
