About Brad

I have tutored for 7 years in a variety of different subjects and for ages ranging from 6-58 years. My personal approach is to make sure I achieve these specific things, at the very least:
- form a connection with the learner
- understand specific areas of struggle or desired growth
- address lack of confidence (where applicable) - I've found this to be a significant factor in hampering progress
- equip the learner to think for him/herself
- help the learner to connect with and find pleasure in what they're learning

I love interacting with people and I believe strongly in the value of learning from other people. I have taught in one-on-one settings as well as small classrooms. My main focuses having been teaching English, Music and History.

Music is one of my first and main loves. I have 2 degrees in music, with a special focus on Singing Performance. I have taught singing and music theory to individuals, tutorial groups at the South African College of Music and to small singing groups. I help children understand the foundational principles of singing techniques and helping them to apply those techniques to singing the music that they love. I have seen such joy in children's faces when they see and hear their singing voices grow.

I have spent time teaching English to children who need to better understand some of the more complex elements of the language by working through a variety of examples and helping them to understand how to apply the rules. It's important to have an understanding which allows you to tackle examples you haven't seen before. I've also helped children who have little to no English vocabulary. I start by understanding some key phrases in their language and then work through some of the very basics of the English language and vocabulary. This allows for swift initial progress which in turn sees an increase in confidence, before moving on to more complex work. It's an incredibly rewarding and humbling process watching children develop as they begin to understand and use a new language. I love being a part of that process.

One thing I love about History is all the stories. I have found that one of the main difficulties in learning about and understanding History is getting stuck on seeing facts and only facts. When you start to understand History as a collection of stories and you begin to dive into the context of the time, the facts become so simple to navigate. I love helping with this process and will spend time with your children talking through historical content as well as smart methods of writing essays and answering source-based questions.

I'd love to be able to help you learn more and uncover the things you're interested in. I believe that everyone has the ability to do great things, you just need someone to help you get there. I'd love to help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I studied a Bachelor of Music Degree at both the University of Cape Town and UC Santa Cruz. I studied a postgraduate Honors Degree at the University of Cape Town, specializing in Singing Performance.

Government & Politics

I have always had a keen interest in international government and politics. With it's close ties to History I have spent much time reading, learning and teaching on the topic of the role of government and the effects of politics around the world.
