About Michael

My career in education began when I tried substitute teaching. I found that I was very good at teaching and I really enjoyed the job. I have worked with various levels and many cultures. My career has required continuous training and development that has helped me be an effective teacher. I promote lifelong learning because education is an asset that no matter where one goes and no matter what one decides to endeavor, his/her education can never be taken from him/her. It can only be enhanced.

I have been blessed with the gift of teaching. Occasionally, I run into former students and employers and it is such a joy. They appreciate the learning experience they had in my classes. It’s a great feeling to see my former students grown up and working or pursuing a higher education. The time spent preparing lesson plans, providing before and after school tutorials, late night grading and professional development seminars has been worth it. Students are worth the extra effort.

When I entered college, I wanted to be a buyer. I had worked in a department store during high school and the retail industry was appealing to me. I sold clothing and shoes and I was good at it. The only thing was the work requirements. If I didn’t work throughout the year, I didn’t make the money I needed to support my family. This was hard and I took a part time position as a substitute teacher and I loved it.

The students were as young as kindergarten, but I had found my God given gift…..teaching. So, I changed majors. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a minor in History.
My work experience began as I was hired in by an elementary school as an ESOL teacher. I didn’t have the ESOL certification, but on the job training proved to be the next best method of gaining the knowledge to effectively teach our students. I loved the sixth graders, but I moved on to the middle school and my ESOL classes have the highest passing percentage out of all of my classes.
The seventh graders had an unlimited amount of energy. The eighth graders worked hard because they wanted to go to high school and they didn't want to take rigorous summer school classes. I started coaching and was able to enrich student and family lives through a holistic approach. Teaching and coaching were my joy. My school (coaches and administration) voted me coach of the year in 1998 and in 2001.

I carried over strategies and ideas from school to home and my kids were introduced to a lifestyle of learning. I started my own lawn company, earned a personal trainer certificate, taught Sunday school and actively participated in professional development seminars. Becoming an educator was a dream come true.
I didn’t mention that education could have possibly been in my blood. My mom and dad were educators and my sister and I followed their lead. I am still learning.

I am currently in graduate school at Capella University. My degree will be in Higher Education. I have a desire to help create better teachers when I leave the student classroom arena. My energy and love for education continues to grow. I’m thankful for the technology implementations that give our students a wide scope for learning. I’m thankful for the opportunity I have to be a part of the growth and leadership of our country. I’m thankful for the lifestyle of learning that I am able to give to every young person I meet. Education is worth the effort and no student or teacher should ever be left behind.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I started my teaching career as an ESOL teacher. My classes achieved a 100% passing rate. The diversity in the ESOL classroom is a challenge that provides enrichment and fun to an active learning experience. I successfully completed the Spanish for Teachers certification at Brookhaven Community College.

GED

I have 12 years of experience teaching GED classes. The learning experience is fun and active because it utilizes the knowledge a student has gained through life experiences. Test taking can be challenging but my classes learn to master objectives and are comfortable and confident when taking tests.

STAAR

I have experience with standardized testing. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. My students have a high percentage of mastery. It is essential, in Texas, that STAAR objectives are learned. My classroom teaching career has equipped me with the knowledge and instructional methods that ensure academic success. Every student has the ability to learn and I stand firm on the theory that no child be left behind.

Study Skills

I have been an educator for 25 years. I am a certified classroom teacher in Texas. Learning requires study skills so that key concepts and mastering objectives can be achieved. Everyone has a style of learning and when it is active, study skills can be applied to every area of the curriculum.
