About Alexander

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Philosophy and minor in Biology, and I am currently a student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center specializing in Pediatric Neuropsychology. I chose this field because of my passion for working with children and adolescents to bring out their full potential. Because of my background, I bring a unique combination of skills to my tutoring: 1) a practical ability to engage children and adolescents, especially those with developmental or learning disabilities; 2) a theoretical knowledge of biological, psychological, and social development and their effects on an individual's learning; 3) a useful understanding of the stress and anxiety that may come with struggling academically or applying to college and how to cope effectively; and 4) most importantly, experience with teaching, supervising, and mentoring students to meet different goals.

I offer tutoring in a wide variety of subjects as well as standardized testing and college applications. My previous teaching experience ranges from grade school to graduate school. I have spent time tutoring K-12th grade students in Taiwan to improve their English, specifically verbal and written comprehension and communication, to prepare them for standardized testing. I have also spent time tutoring high school students in multiple areas related to college applications such as SAT test-taking, essay writing, interview coaching, and organizational skills. Furthermore, I have tutored college-level writing for college papers and personal statements. Finally, I have assisted with teaching first-year graduate courses in Child Assessment and acted as a supervisor and mentor for multiple undergraduate research projects that went on to be published. Importantly, I have clinical experience working privately to assess academic achievement with children and adolescents with a variety of neurological, developmental, and learning disorders such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, epilepsy, brain trauma, etc.

Overall, I use a teaching style that is personalized and engaging. On the one hand, I take the time to assess the student's specific academic needs, set goals and create a plan of action to achieve those goals, and prepare individualized lesson plans and study materials. On the other hand, I believe that conquering the anxiety and fears related to struggling academically is equally important for their academic improvement and future success. Thus, I strive to become both a teacher and a friend to each of the students I tutor.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I minored in Biology at The University of Texas at Austin and have taken courses in molecular biology, cell biology, anatomy, genetics, developmental biology, and physiology. I am currently working on my PhD in clinical neuropsychology, so I also have extensive knowledge of the biology of brain and behavior.

Statistics

I have taken AP Statistics in high school (received a 5 on the AP test) and college-level statistics. I have also taken two graduate-level statistics courses covering up to multivariate statistical methods. Additionally, I have direct experience with tutoring college students in statistics, helping them complete homework assignments and prepare for exams.

I also have an educational background in cognition and learning in both undergraduate and graduate courses.
